The Reclamation Project

The Reclamation Project As the Arctic sea ice melts, nations clamor to raise their flags over newly open waters to claim the natural resources that lie beneath them - oil, manganese, diamonds, fish - and to control shipping lanes. Meanwhile, rising sea levels threaten the world below.

On June 29th, 2008, Miami artist Xavier Cortada arrived ...at the North Pole and planted a green flag to "reclaim it for nature.”

Cortada created this NYFA sponsored artist project to engage people globally to help slow the polar thaw: Participants plant a native tree next to a green flag at home and ask their neighbors to do the same. (Visit www.nativeflags.org to participate.)

Reforestation reduces the greenhouse gases that cause global climate change.

During December 3-6, 2009, ecoartspace is presenting Native Flags at the Verge Art Fair in Miami Beach, Florida.

The Reclamation Project

The Reclamation Project As part of the Verge Art Fair, there will also be a Reclamation Project installation of mangrove seedlings inside the lobby of the Catalina Hotel, 1732 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139 from December 3-6, 2009.

Please join us on November 14th at 10:00 am on Miami Beach as we engage Lincoln Road store owners in our eco-art effort. We will be meeting at the New World Symphony's Lincoln Theater on Pennsylvania and Lincoln Road (across from the Starbucks).

Volunte...ers will install the seedlings in water-filled plastic cups on the retail windows of Lincoln Road (a location where they would have naturally grown decades ago) and ask store owners to care for them for a couple of months before they are collected and planted on Biscayne Bay.

You can see images of some of the "adopted" seedlings hanging at storefronts the last couple of years by visiting:
