The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Stopped by Dragonfly. They've knocked down the wall between the pizza area up front and the bar in the back. So you can go in the front door to get a pizza at the counter, or you can order one at the bar.

Posted a review of Petrella's, which opened recently in the former Slapshot Pizza location. I'm never sure if I'm doing a place a favor by reviewing them shortly after they open, but this was decent, for a sheet pizza, and I'll be back for a pie sometime.
BTW - I mentioned Dragonfly on Park Ave. - I think the pizza is s...old in the front part of the building in the old Pontillo's, which is separate from the bar, in the old Prepp's space.Read More

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Had to edit my Acme review to correct my statement that Acme was the only bar I could think of around here that makes pizza. After I posted it, it occurred to me that in fact several others have sprung up recently - Sully's on South Ave., Scotland Yard on St. Paul, and according to the RocWiki site, Dragonfly on Park Ave. So we may be seeing a new trend here. If so, Acme was ahead of its time in that regard.

I hadn't planned on finishing the Acme review until probably next week sometime, but coincidentally, a few days after going there I got an email from a reader asking me if and when I was going to report on Acme, so I expedited the review and posted it yesterday. I still plan to hit every pizzeria around here eventually..., and there aren't that many left to go, but if you are especially interested in a place let me know and I'll try to get to it sooner rather than later.Read More

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Posted a review of Brio today. Not bad, but disappointing for a wood-fired pizza. I've got several more of those to try (Lucca, Romeo's, La Bella Vita, et al.), so maybe my luck will improve.

So Pontillo's has been named our "Best Pizza Joint."
OK, but since each Pontillo's is independently operated, and the pizza can vary quite a bit from one to another, calling them the best pizza "joint" is kind of like saying that "Ray's" makes the best pizza in NYC. (In case you didn't know, there are countless "Ray's" ...pizzerias in NY - Ray's Original, Original Ray's, Famous Original Ray's, etc. All different.)Read More

I've been concentrating on trying places I haven't been to, but I was in Henrietta recently and went back to Joe's Brooklyn Pizza. His "Grandma's" pizza blew me away. I hope the style catches on around here. I wouldn't expect a lot of other pizzerias' versions to match up to Joe's, but if they can make a Grandma's pie ...that's anywhere near as good as the one I had, that would be a plus for the Rochester pizza scene.Read More

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Posted review of Amy Rose Pizza in Scottsville. I gave it a C-. This was one where I really would've liked to give it a higher score. It's the hometown pizzeria, which is important, they seem dedicated, and I have a feeling they do a pretty good job most of the time, but I have to grade based on what I tried. And these weren't all that great. I'll go back sometime if I'm in the area.

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Stromboli Express review is up today. It's pretty good stuff, but as nicely charred as the crust was, it was remarkably soft and floppy.
This has nothing to do with the review, but it also surprises me that they're only open till 9. With all the bars around there you'd think they could make a fortune if they stayed open late on weekends.

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Today's blog post comes from a reader, whom I thank for some interesting insights into pizza chains.
Pizzeria update: Slapshot Pizza on Dewey is now Petrella's Pizza. I never made it to Slapshot, but will try to get up to Petrella's some time.

Posted the Cam's review. Very impressive for a chain operation.
I nearly bumped them down for the response I got when I called for their hours:
"Hi, what are your hours?"
(2-3 sec. pause) "We close at ten."
"Every day?"
(same pause) *click* (dial tone)
I got the impression he thought I was up to something sneaky and didn't ...want to answer any more questions, but even giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he just didn't hear my second question, he should've made sure he'd answered all my questions before hanging up. But it's still good pizza and I stuck with the B+ that I'd decided on.Read More

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Somewhat belatedly, Rochester seems to be getting on the wood-fired pizza bandwagon. The latest is Scotland Yard Pub on St. Paul St. It opens in the late p.m. and it's not exactly a takeout place, so it'll have to wait until some night when I can check it out for dinner. If anybody else has tried it, I'd like to hear about it.

The review of Mark's went up. It was pretty much what I expected, which is to say, not that great. I don't want to slam it, and you can't argue with success I guess - I mean a lot of people must eat it - but it's funny how the most popular pizzas are, IMO, not even close to being the best pizzas. But it's not just pizz...a. You don't go to McDonald's for a great hamburger either. Maybe it's the power of advertising, I don't know.Read More

The Rochester NY Pizza Blog Just posted the Pudgie's review. It was, well, OK. Other notes: thanks to a reader for some info on Ricci's history, which I mean to incorporate into the blog post. And sharp-eyed followers will note that I've changed my Pizza Guy photo. Same pose, but slightly different artwork, just a bit better sharpness to the line drawing.
