The School of Education, The College of St. Scholastica The School of Education students have the opportunity to participate in an optional field experience in the Brooklyn Center Schools over the undergraduate Spring break (March 15-19, 2010). Education students will be placed in either the high school or elementary school for a full week! Placements will be aligned with y...our licensure field.

Why consider doing this? As schools across Minnesota serve increasingly diverse student populations, those who hire teachers are looking for prospective teachers who have worked within diverse settings. This service learning field experience allows undergraduate and graduate education students the opportunity to integrate their academic training with an urban immersion school experience. The program is intended to create an environment where students can further develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions in their own teaching. While in Brooklyn Center schools, students will work side by side with licensed teachers in a collaborative classroom environment.

Why Brooklyn Center? For over ten years our undergraduate education students have participated in a full day field trip to Brooklyn Center Schools. This experience has been so valuable that many students have asked the SOE for the opportunity to spend a week or longer in this same setting. The Brooklyn Center schools are known for academic excellence and innovation and at the same time are highly diverse and provide a rich urban experience for future teachers.

Brooklyn Center Schools Student Demographics
Student Population: 1755
43% Black 27% White 14% Asian 14% Hispanic 1% American Indian
24% Limited English Proficient 70% Free & Reduced Lunch
11% Special Education 94% Attendance Rate 84% Graduation Rate

Where is Brooklyn Center? The Brooklyn Center High School and Elementary School are both located near the intersection of Interstate 694 and Highway 100 in the Twin Cities.

How will this work? Education students have the option of taking the experience for either 0 or 1 credit. Students will be responsible for their own housing and food while at the experience. We encourage students to work together in finding friends and family who might accommodate them for the week to limit costs. A CSS faculty member will be on-site the entire week to assist students in their orientation and service to the Brooklyn Center Schools.

Curious & want to find out more? Come to the Information Session to learn more. You can also call Cindy Mattson, School of Education Administrative Assistant at 218-723-6108 or email her at cmattson@css.edu. Indicating your interest does not commit you to taking the experience but provides us with an idea of potential interest.

Information can also be found on the School of Education web site and on our Education FaceBook page!

The School of Education, The College of St. Scholastica Long ago, Native American children had lots of toys to play with and many different types of games. Making and playing with toys helped children develop skills they would need when they became adults. Sports activities helped build physical strength and hand/eye coordination.

During this interactive workshop we will rec...reate (and play with) a number of Native toys and games for use in your classroom. Participants will explore lesson ideas and resources specifically designed for teaching about different Native cultures.

The School of Education, The College of St. Scholastica Thinking about new teacher induction: What kind of support and help do you think new teachers need the most? Who should provide this help?

New teachers need to find a mentor who can help answer their questions...that worked best for me! :) A lot of teachers need help with getting organized and getting into a routine. Once you master that you can leave school at the end of the day and not feel so exhausted!
