The Second Guess

Paying homage to the original Detroit bands of the MC5 and The Stooges era, The Second Guess drive their own modern day Motor City sounds into the city known for its blue-collar work ethic. Accelerating to revive Detroit garage rock, second-generation bands like The Second Guess rev up the icons of the past. Armed with strong classic cues, The Second Guess continue to show their support for the city’s classic garage rock sound with infectious melodies and original songs that hum like a fine-tuned engine.

Reigniting an opportunity lost the first time around, The Second Guess combine their musical talent to reinvent The Sounds of Nite original, “Hung Up” on their second album, Coastality. The Second Guess guitarist, Paul Briles took the wheel from his father, John Briles, whose band, The Sounds of Nite, stood a parental consent form away from being signed in the 70’s. Instead of achieving stardom, John passed on his musical passion and guitar skills to his son. As a teenager, Paul taught lifelong friend and current band mate, Dave Conger (lead vocals/guitar) to play the guitar.

Dave Conger and Matt Mayotte (drums) fueled The Second Guess formation and enhanced their sound by adding Paul on bass. In the fall of 2004, Paul shifted gears into a more familiar spot on the guitar and Jason Smith took over on bass.

Self-producing their first album, My Life This Year, they received airplay on WUMD College Radio, 89.3 WHFR.FM, XM 43, and the Detroit modern rock station, 89X (88.7 FM).

Pulling out all the stops, The Second Guess will release their full-length album, Coastality, in April 2007. Symbolizing freedom from the monotony of everyday life, the ocean appears as an infinite space unconfined by reality. Coastality explicates the longing to reside on the coast; breaking routine and living life on ones own terms. Understanding that they arrived here by building on the musical styles they love, The Second Guess still yearn for the unlimited possibilities that lie ahead. (read less)
