Thanksgiving isn’t a religious holiday. But many families sitting down for the traditional turkey feast will thank someone. If not God, who? Begging the question, is Thanksgiving a religious tradition in disguise as a national holiday? Duke University theologian Stephen...

Are American Catholics facing irreconcilable differences? The late Chicago Cardinal Joseph Bernardin didn’t believe that. Shortly before his death in 1996 he founded the Catholic Common Ground Initiative, a forum for the faithful to confront their polarities and celebrate their...

Thought provoking. I was a Catholic child, and see much good in structure. I think the tripping point might be "truth-ownership." The eternal question is, can/should believers of any sect or group adapt to cultural change, or stand firm that it will NOT? Should it lead it, and how? Then you need numbers, i.e., appeal to the masses, i.e. marketing... See More...so we can't avoid "culture." Add to the dilemma liberation theology (I plead guilty-on my hard-won spiritual days) vs. conservatism and there you have it--a perfect storm.

Of all the statements, directives, guidelines and off-handed remarks offered by American Catholic bishops this week, one in particular struck a chord with me personally and professionally. That was the comment by Chicago Cardinal Francis George suggesting that my colleagues...

i think writers for religiously-headed media outlets should understand that their organization's authority allows it to select for what upholds its affiliated ideology, and may as well provide a forum for amicable dissent, but only as far as is permitted by its own governing body.

Sister Anne Flanagan My (first) guest post for The Seeker... It is, as Manya commented below, a "fertile" topic for discussion; one to which Catholics bring a unique and sometimes controversial contribution.

a crazy man's last desperate plea for god to save his soul and the souls of those he was about to kill? to have mercy on he and his country and all people and the world forever at war?

During WWII there was a popular song, "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." The word "motivation" is slippery - it includes a lot of cultural things, including the way the person has constructed his religious world view. That construct can be an aberration of what the religion believes is God's/Allah's true will for people to respect/treat with justice and love fellow humans. Thank God most people of all faiths know this deep down and can resist demagogue bandwagons.
