I've been a Sierra Club activist for years because it is the largest and most influential environmental organization in the country. However, its American middle class environmentalist orientation, with all its attendant contradictions, has always bothered me a bit. While the first part of Sierra bimonthly magazine features ecological news and issues, for example, the last quarter of the magazine is a travel agency, encouraging people the travel all over the country/world, obviously in carbon burning trains, planes and automobiles, to hike once they get there. Middle class environmentalist seem to like to do certain "green"things, as long as it doesn't interfere with their consumer driven, materialistic life style(buying a Prius, solar panels, etc) and the club seems to minister to these values. This includes the way the club operates. Most people have to drive, often dozens of miles, to go to a local Sierra Club meeting- the ultimate hypocrisy. These kinds of goings-on will not save the planet for us humans. The club should be decentralized to the point where most people are no more than a bike ride away from a chapter meeting place.
I encourage the club to promote more simple, community orientated ecological living arrangements to replace individualistic materialism as a better path toward happiness and environmental protection.

Congratulations on the win today (blocking two coal-fired power plants from being built) in Kansas!!! Great article about it here:

http://www.kansascity.com/105/story/601775.html

I love this quote, from a Republican member of the House who ultimately voted with the Sierra Club and against the coal-fired power plants:

"Colloton said her constituents convinced her. 'I’m amazed at how well-educated many Kansans are on issues about the environment and energy,' she said."

That's what I'm talking about! Great work Sierra Club!!!!!

Oh Sierra Club, I have been a member for 6 years. Why did you suspend the entire Florida branch for criticizing your deal with Clorox? One of the most dangerous chemical companies in 2004! Why!?
