The Unlikely Disciple

The Unlikely Disciple loves this video review from "suburban rapper" K.Flay. (Sidenote: she's right about the nicknames. Rooster, Roose the Moose, the Roose Caboose, I've heard them all.)

I can't put it down. Caught my eye at B&N..over a latte I skimmed some pages...smirked wildly as I read it...and thought Oh I gotta get this..and did....can't wait to finish but kind of sad when it ends..cause it's really something I look forward to reading every evening.

The Unlikely Disciple got reviewed in yesterday's Buffalo News! "[A] fascinating sociological and anthropological study" and "...an entertaining story of college friendships that sheds a little insight into evangelism."

To be a stranger in a strange land. It’s a rather formulaic plot device in story-telling — as well as the title of a Robert Heinlein novel. But the juxtaposition of “stranger” ...

As somoneone who is at LU alot because of the work I do. I know, how should I say, the up and downs of the place. This book confirmed some things and also change my outlook on others. A must read for anyone.

I finally read this book I've been hearing about! I graduated from both LCA and LU... over 10 years and 4 kids later, my life with Christ is richer than ever but my political views now sway "the other direction" (I'd say BECAUSE of my relationship with Jesus, not in spite of it) so from that point of view (feeling like a political black sheep) I ... Read Morereally appreciated your book. The first half, I laughed out loud in public on multiple occasions! But from somewhere mid-point on I was just compelled on a deeper level and couldn't put it down... partly because I knew you were coming to the point of Jerry's passing, but also simply because you're just a fantastic writer, so transparent, so descriptive. I felt like I knew you and all your friends before it was done - even your family... excellent, excellent.

I was a junior the semester Kevin came to Liberty. I knew a surprising number of his renamed-to-protect-the-innocent characters and I experienced many of the same events he did. I've never felt more compelled to read a book than after I previewed the first few pages of The Unlikely Disciple. It was genuinely moving to see what was, in several ways ... Read Moreat least, my life from the perspective of someone so close to being totally objective. I suppose it would be accurate to assume that my life is the antithesis to his, and this book opened my eyes to so many things I willingly overlooked for so long. Many of which I deeply regret. A fabulous read for anyone wanting a bit of insight into the culture that is the Christian Right. Growing-up part of that you nailed it on the head. I am now the black sheep of the family with my left-wing views but I enjoyed your journey to the Other side and found myself chuckling out loud. Took the quiz and got 14/15! Your writing and story-telling are amazing and I wish you much success in your life! Thank you for sharing.

I'm late to the game- heard the interview when my NPR station re-ran it last weekend. I'm originally from the Shenandoah Valley and grew up hearing all the Falwell folklore. I ran out to get the book & read it in one sitting! Fabulous, excellent piece of work!

Kevin: Love the book! So insightful and authentic. I know several Liberty students who work at Sandy Cove, a Christian camp & retreat center in MD, during the summers. Is this the camp that "Anna" worked at in 2007? Just wondering?! Do you have a next project in mind? Would love to talk with you about Scott Peck's stages of spiritual growth found in his book "The Different Drum". It changed my life!

You did such a great job with this book, Kevin - I just finished reading it and I've been raving about it to everyone. As an ex-evangelical myself, it really struck home - your observations and conclusions were dead on, but fair. Really nice job, Rooster.

I think my favorite line is, "knowing the language of the Bible can help secular liberals reach across faith boundaries and build common ground with even the most conservative Christians." Just as in politics, or just about anything else with two sides, it always seems that one side wants the other to reach across or concede to their own side. ... Read MoreWhy is it that Christians must always concede their ideals for secularists? I think it shows responsibility for "secular liberals to reach across the faith boundaries."
Other than that, it is important to understand the Bible, if for no other reason than it is a frequent category on Jeopardy.

I'm not religious at all but I do try to study religious texts simply for how helpful they can be in understanding art and literature.
