The Unlikely Disciple

I can't put it down. Caught my eye at B&N..over a latte I skimmed some pages...smirked wildly as I read it...and thought Oh I gotta get this..and did....can't wait to finish but kind of sad when it ends..cause it's really something I look forward to reading every evening.

I definitely read this book in a weekend. Best book I've read this year

As somoneone who is at LU alot because of the work I do. I know,how should I say, the up and downs of the place. This book confirmed some things and also change my outlook on others. A must read for anyone.

But from somewhere mid-point on I was just compelled on a deeper level and couldn't put it down... partly because I knew you were coming to the point of Jerry's passing, but also simply because you're just a fantastic writer, so transparent, so descriptive. I felt like I knew you and all your friends before it was done - even your family... excellent, excellent.

I was a junior the semester Kevin came to Liberty. I knew a surprising number of his renamed-to-protect-the-innocent characters and I experienced many of the same events he did. I've never felt more compelled to read a book than after I previewed the first few pages of The Unlikely Disciple. It was genuinely moving to see what was, in several ways ... I suppose it would be accurate to assume that my life is the antithesis to his, and this book opened my eyes to so many things I willingly overlooked for so long. Many of which I deeply regret. A fabulous read for anyone wanting a bit of insight into the culture that is the Christian Right. Growing-up part of that you nailed it on the head. I am now the black sheep of the family with my left-wing views but I enjoyed your journey to the Other side and found myself chuckling out loud. Took the quiz and got 14/15! Your writing and story-telling are amazing and I wish you much success in your life! Thank you for sharing.

I'm late to the game- heard the interview when my NPR station re-ran it last weekend. I'm originally from the Shenandoah Valley and grew up hearing all the Falwell folklore. I ran out to get the book & read it in one sitting! Fabulous, excellent piece of work!

Kevin: Love the book! So insightful and authentic. I know several Liberty students who work at Sandy Cove, a Christian camp & retreat center in MD, during the summers. Is this the camp that "Anna" worked at in 2007? Just wondering?! Do you have a next project in mind? Surprisingly tackful considering the source. I like that Liberty students can be considered "socialized". Hope that dispells the idea that students are some counter culture cult, but real people in a real world.

I think my favorite line is, "knowing the language of the Bible can help secular liberals reach across faith boundaries and build common ground with even the most conservative Christians." Just as in politics, or just about anything else with two sides, it always seems that one side wants the other to reach across or concede to their own side. ... Other than that, it is important to understand the Bible, if for no other reason than it is a frequent category on Jeopardy.

I'm not religious at all but I do try to study religious texts simply for how helpful they can be in understanding art and literature. I've read the Quran in its entirety, good portions of the Old and New Testaments, and basic studies of the tenants of Hinduism and Buddhism, and it's invaluable knowledge to have. I would suggest not only that ...
