We've already been talking for a half-hour when the woman next to me at the bar blurts out: "You're not a hipster, are you?"1 "Ugh," I groan. ...

that's "(Yes I am) a hipster."

Oh, wow. Where to begin. First of all, I'm trying to think of what she could have meant by "You're not a hipster, are you?" Maybe "you're not going to be predictable, right?" Secondly, really? After *talking to you for 30 minutes* she asks if you're (not) a hipster? Thirdly, I know this startlingly and flawlessly au courant hipster, and he's wickedly smart and funny, which shocked me over and over because I quite naturally completely underestimated him due to the hipsterness. In fact, he might still be registering - unrecognized by me - on my internal smart-and-funny-for-a-hipster scale. Last but not least, can you promise that the next time someone asks you that you will smile broadly and say "why, yes. Yes I am a hipster."?

Story about the Mandarin reminds me of this Nerve story--which is not amusing like the pithy anecdote, but contains the same lesson:

'The Good Samaritan of Smith Street' is amazing. I'm still laughing. Should be in The New Yorker.
