I received an e-mail from the Wilderness Society today with a quiz question: Can you name this species:

Of course I could! I actually saw one once. I was driving north on I-75 in a blizzard. I was definitely the only car between Gaylord and the Mackinac Bridge ... Read Moregoing north--I had to make fresh tracks on the highway. I was going about 30 mpg, steering by "ear". I would drive my car in the right lane, completely invisible and white with snow, and listen for the rumble strip, which told me to veer slightly to the left back into the lane. I suddenly saw an orange thing in the road up ahead, and carefully slowed, grabbing the videocam off the front seat. I thought it was a warning light, because it sparkled orange, then I saw it was an animal, about 25 inches long with a tail just as long and very thick and bushy! By the time, the cam booted up, the animal had scampered away. It was a lynx! Out prowling in the blizzard for easy game--deer wandering aimlessly in the moonlight! Cool!

Thank you for sharing this article. With the amount of money we spend on research, it's amazing we have not developed more environmentally respectful ways to extract the natural resources from our earth. It's also amazing that we have not learned from our past mistakes, that greed over-rides even our basic knowledge. When did money become more ... Read Moreimportant than our health and the health of the world we live in? What an ignorant comment about water already being toxic, so who cares if we make it more toxic? Unbelievable! That person should be backing their words up, and drinking the water they are polluting. I'm glad there are people who still care and are fighting for those who cannot. Thank you!

There are organizations like TreadLightly! who are teaching the ORV culture how to respect the environment and the trails they use. This is a project that would accomplish more with collaboration. A lot of damage occurs due to a lack of trail markings and oversight. I could see a lot of benefit with a collaboration of the Wilderness Society and TreadLightly!.
