The Wrights SONG OF AMERICA 50-SONG, THREE-DISC COLLECTION,
TELLS STORY OF AMERICA THROUGH SONG

Producer Ed Pettersen reaches deep into American musical heritage into the present day to convey full spectrum of American music

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A host of respected and Grammy winning indie artists contribute to this unique 50-song..., three-CD set designed to tell the history of our country through song, from 1492 through modern times. Featuring a diverse array of artists including Folk Family Robinson (Black Crowes), the Blind Boys of Alabama, Devendra Banhart, Martha Wainwright, Andrew Bird, Janis Ian, Marah, Old Crow Medicine Show and more, Song of America spans the folk, blues, rock, R&B, country, classical and hip-hop genres while portraying our nation’s progress. An ambitious but beautifully realized project, the three CDs deliver up gorgeous music as well as many interesting historical tidbits.

The collection is the brainchild of former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and artist/songwriter/producer Ed Pettersen, and is co-produced by Pettersen, Bob Olhsson and David Macias. Reno, who appropriately is pretty well acquainted with our nation's history (lawyers have to learn a thing called precedence), does not take any credit for the musical direction of the set. Pettersen, whom we introduced to you last fall with his latest folk/rock release, The New Punk Blues of Ed Pettersen, headed up the production team and was in studio with many of the artists, recording between Nashville, New York and LA. Other beautiful gems were delivered by the artist's themselves, such as Harper Simon's makeover of Yankee Doodle and Janis Ian's haunting "Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye".

“I thought that music would be a great way to engage listeners, especially young listeners, and spark their interest so they could gain a greater understanding and appreciation for our history. I am very proud to be associated with this collection of inspired performances.”
--Janet Reno, former U.S. Attorney General

While the three CD’s feature new versions of beloved songs interpreted by contemporary artists, the accompanying liner notes focus on the history behind the songs and the events that trace our nation’s progress. Dr. Deane Root of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for American Music, and the Voices Across Time project, provided timelines and in-depth historical notes on the music. CD sales benefit non-profit organizations which promote the preservation of our musical history and the teaching of history through music, including the Voices Across Time project, Folk Alliance, and the Sing Out Resource Center.

Other key tracks on the collection are John Mellencamp’s version of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” Blind Boys of Alabama’s “Let Us Break Bread Together,” Bettye LaVette’s transcendent take on Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets Of Philadelphia,” the first recording of The Black Crowes’ Robinson brothers singing with their father Stan (“Reuben James”), Martha Wainwright’s updated rendition of “I Am Woman,” Andrew Bird’s wistful account of “How You Gonna Keep ‘Em Down On The Farm,” and The Del McCoury Band’s soon-to-be-classic take on Bob Dylan’s “The Times, They Are A Changin’.”

Yes, you guys were VERY good. I don't exactly follow the Nashville music scene, but I was in town visiting my brother when he surprised me with tickets to the Ryman for your show with Chris Isaak. I have never been to the Ryman, so I was just thrilled to see anyone there. After watching and listening to your band, I found myself saying "Wow! That ... See Morewas a good song!" after nearly every song! You made a very positive impression on me and you now have a new fan. Can't decide which album to buy first! Thanks for the music!
