December 5 – Saturday – Bill Whitaker: Frontier Forts of Iowa
10:30 a.m. at Wickiup Hill
At least fifty-six frontier forts once stood in, or within view of, what is now the state of Iowa. The earliest date to the 1680s, while the latest date to the Dakota uprising of 1862. Some were vast compounds housing hundreds of so...ldiers; others consisted of a few sheds built by a trader along a riverbank. Regardless of their size and function—William Whittaker and his contributors include any compound that was historically called a fort, whether stockaded or not, as well as all military installations—all sought to control and manipulate Indians to the advantage of European and American traders, governments, and settlers. Frontier Forts of Iowa draws extensively upon the archaeological and historical records to document this era of transformation from the seventeenth-century fur trade until almost all Indians had been removed from the region. Cost is $2.50/adult, $1/child 16 and under, or $5/family.

In any other setting it is called walking. It is mundane, irksome even, means to get from Point A to Point B when there is no drive-through option. But do

Since the insecticide DDT was banned, population sizes of most birds of prey have increased across the continent. In particular, the bird-eating Accipiter hawks such as Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks are increasing in abundance and are now observed more frequently than ever before at backyard feeders. Still, remarkab...ly little is known about the behavior of these predators. Dr. Roth has studied the behavior of these two hawk species during the winter with the goal of understanding how they influence the risk of predation in their prey (song birds). He will discuss the predatory behavior of these hawks and how this research allows us to understand how prey and predators interact at different spatial scales, what these hawks need to survive, and what aspects of modern landscapes might influence their populations and success.

Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Area Come and participate in tagging monarchs collected at Wickiup Hill. We will place an I.D. sticker on their wings and then release the butterflies. Unlike most other insects in temperate climates, monarch butterflies cannot survive a long, cold winter. Instead, they migrate to winter roosting spots. Will one of these monarchs make it to the winter roost in Mexico?
Help the Monarchs on their pilgrimage to Mexico.
