The P-38 was unsuccessful huh? So I guess that America's top two aces flew it means nothing, nor does the Yamamoto mission. I wonder what the yardstick for 'unsuccessful' is. Yes, other WWII fighters did perform better and had more postwar longevity than the Lightning, but I think to say it was unsuccessful is not quite true.

Wikipedia has a pretty good writeup on the P-38 describing the problems and improvements to overcome the problems. The P-38 met its original specs quite well but as its mission expanded, enhancements were needed and delivered.
