New Documentary Profiles the State’s Extraordinary and
Endangered Examples of Mid-Century Modern Architecture

A Co-production of Diane Smith Media and CPTV
Premieres Thursday, November 12 at 9 p.m.

(encore broadcasts ...on Saturday, November 14 at 6 p.m., Sunday,
November 15 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, November 22 at 10:30 p.m.)

HARTFORD,
Conn. (October 29, 2009) – We see them all around us—the iconic buildings of
modern architecture in Connecticut—but what if they disappeared?

Built in the
middle of the twentieth century these “mid century moderns” were startling
additions to the landscape. They range from the Glass House in New Canaan, to
the Phoenix Companies’ “boat building” in Hartford, to a hockey rink shaped
like a whale in New Haven, and a “floating tower” on Long Wharf.

The
world-renowned architects who designed these buildings took advantage of new
technologies and materials to reshape our cities and the suburbs. In Bloomfield
the CIGNA Wilde Building dramatically changed the American workplace. But, just
50 years later, many of these landmarks are threatened.

In a new
half-hour documentary, Living Modern in Connecticut, which
premieres on Thursday, November 12 at 9 p.m. on Connecticut
Public Television (encore broadcasts on Saturday, November 14 at 6 p.m.,
Sunday, November 15 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, November 22 at 10:30 p.m.), host and
producer Diane Smith tells the story of these notable buildings, and opens
viewers’ eyes to a new era in historic preservation. As the documentary makes
clear, historic preservation has progressed far beyond saving that colonial
home on the town green.

Paranormal Lecture
at the Gunn

Insight Paranormal Agency recently conducted a paranormal investigation
at both the 1908 Gunn Memorial Library, and the 1781 Museum. Come hear
what the ghost hunters found roaming the halls of the Gunn during a
lecture on Thursday October 29, at 6:30 p.m.
in the Wykeham Room of the Library. Ton...y Diana, co-founder of Insight
Paranormal Agency, will explain the different types of ghosts, the
equipment they use in their surveys, and show evidence of haunted sites
that they have investigated in Connecticut.
Insight is a paranormal
investigation group comprised of volunteers who have a passion for the
supernatural. They seek answers to questions about the other side, but
with an ear towards reality. Steve Bednar, co-founder of Insight
Paranormal Agency, explains what got him interested in the paranormal:
"I have always been interested in trying to find answers about 'the
other side'. Is there a heaven and hell? Or just spirits and ghosts, or
perhaps all of the previously stated? I have had personal experiences
growing up that are unexplained and after learning ghost hunting
techniques I set forward in search of a group as focused and determined
as I was for answers and had a passion for the hunt. That group is
Insight Paranormal Agency."

Insight Paranormal Agency has been featured on KISS 95.7 and Better
Connecticut on WFSB. Bring your Washington ghost stories to share!
This event is free and open to the public. The Gunn Memorial Library
and Museum is located at 5 Wykeham Road, the intersection of Wykeham
Road and Route 47 on Washington Green. Call 860-868-7756 for more
information.

I know this is eastern Ct...but it's locally grown...Quintessential
Ct....I'll stand up for Pink Ravine Rd on Mansfield..a long kept secret
of Mansfield ....farm land, cemetery, pine forest, pond, old mill
spot..dirt surface, ravine,.it has it all.. Rt. 32 at it's base and the
wonderful Willimantic River Valley, and then m...erging with North
Eagleville Rd on the other end.. The first wild and wonderful spot I
explored...near the Depot Campus too....a labyrinth of back roads and
scenic views......then there is the Eagleville Dam...and tons of
trails...rt. 32 is a state treasure along Mansfield's stretch....should
be preserved just as it is....still open farmland. (except for Bird Dog
Packy) Then..there is the Sterns Dairy Farm on Mansfield City
Rd...another state treasure......that should be preserved too...just as
it is..for the geese, for us......for our children...MAnsfield City Rd.
drops down into Willimantic...beautiful at night...
