Grant of its First Patent!!! under Patent Application No. TT/A/2009/0008

The P.H.I. team is pleased to announce the first patent grant under which the P.H.I. will be produced.

Patent Application No. TT/A/2009/00080 "Apparatus for Percussive Harmonic Musical Synthesis (APHAMS)" applied for “in the name of Brian Copeland et al. is in the form in which it received a favourable Written Opinion, complies with the Act and Rules of the Patent Act and Rules 1996 of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.”

The Written Opinion of the International Searching Authority (Austrian Patent Office) with regard to APHAMS was published on 27 April 2009. WIPO has posted the patent application at http://www.patentlens.net/patentlens/structured.cgi?patnum=WO_2009_054821_A3R4. It is recommended that readers view the pdf version.

The WIPO Written Opinion referenced several patents, including 7,030,305 B1 (Cupid) - electronic synthesized steepan drum (E-Pan).

The WIPO examiner stated that "the solution proposed in independent claim 1 (of APHAMS) is neither contained in nor suggested by the documents (patents listed above) cited in Search Report, the subject matter of independent claim 1 (of APHAMS) is new and involves an inventive step."

ALL the referenced patents have been cited as "OF NO PARTICULAR RELEVANCE" to the APHAMS patent application WO 2009/054821 by the WIPO examiners.

Further patents
The legal Team has applied for grant of patents in multiple international jurisdictions and these are being prosecuted with equal verve and vigour.

The Biography of Aaron Andrews - DJ Android

Trinidadian born DJ Aaron C A better know to the Trinidadian Electronic Dance Music scene as "Android" always had a great passion for music . His older brother who was a huge rap/hip-hop fanatic got him involved in hip-hop music. He continued to love rap/hip-hop for a very long time in his life until he got a calling to Dance Music. By the tender age of 13 Android began listening to the commercialised forms of dance music by Artists such as Alice Deejay, Ian van Dahl, Scooter, Darude and especially most of the Euro-dance songs which occasionally got air play on local radio stations. It was only when Android's sister in the U.K. purchased him an Electronic Dance Music compilation, that he began exploring the many different forms and sub-genres of dance music. By the age of 15 Android bought this program which he saw in a magazine : "Mtv music generator". At the time he thought that was how dance music was created and began experimenting with the different samples, pre-sets and effects. His time was greatly consumed by making beats and listening to his creations. He was completely fascinated, so much that he had to spread the word of his music somehow. This is when the young fellow realised he wanted to DJ. His neighbour who was a DJ, got him involved in the profession. Android would nag him until he eventually practiced on his Numark Cdn-88s and Numark Mixer .His neighbour allowed him to play some tunes in a house party he was playing at ,and from then Android knew he wanted to stick with deejaying and also take it further. Android was so determined to become a DJ, that he would put in Cd's in 2 standard 'boom-box' Cd players and try to blend in both of the songs by altering the volumes on each CD player. While travelling to different countries Android discovered different fusions and sub-genres of Electronic Dance Music and began appreciating every form of it. He knew he had to get his own decks very soon and began saving for them. At the age of 18 Android saved enough money to buy a mixer. A year later he saved more money for two separate CD-DJ decks. After practicing day and night and dedicating all his time to music, Android began free-lancing at a few well known clubs and lounges around Trinidad . Now at the age of 22 and with a very matured taste in Electronic Dance Music Android is making his name in both the Underground and the commercialised entertainment markets of Trinidad, still enjoying gigs at a popular nightclubs, bars and lounges.

Android also wanted to be a qualified producer. He enrolled himself in an audio engineering school in Port-Of-Spain Trinidad where his mentor, a well known singer in the early 90's from Trinidadian Rapso group Kindred taught him the intricacies of becoming a producer. He plans to produce quality music and hopes to put Trinidad on the map globally for Electronic Dance Music. He recently completed a production which was his final project for the audio engineering course. The production is entitled "want(move and whine down)" which is a fusion between Tribal -house music and soca music. He is still in the process of completing more productions and is determined to build a proper home studio for his releases. Android uses the alias "Andy-Himself" for his productions. The name Android derived from his last name Andrews. The “And” in Andrews is coined with the name “droid” to form his stage name “Android”. It’s pronounced “Andrewoid”. The name was given to him when he mixed a lot of Electro-House in his sets. Although he still enjoys the sub-genre, his style varies from tribal-house, tech-house, dirty electro house, tech-trance,techno and trance. You can even hear one or two hard dance tunes in his sets which usually keeps the floor moving.

Android also collaborated with local Trinidadian musicians namely Rock band '5 miles to midnight', Jazz singer Caroline Mair as well as Derron Ellies a Pannist who performs with the Percussive Harmonic Instrument ( P.H.I.). He was also the official dj for the launch of the cigarette 'Dunhill Fine Cut' for WITCO.

The Biography of Ken "Professor" Philmore

Ken "Professor" Philmore also called "Pro" is yet another Pannist who enjoys performing with the P.H.I. and sees the opportunities that the P.H.I. will create for himself and other Pannists, without replacing the traditional steelpan. At the 5th Summit of The Americas he stated: “I want to tell you people that I support and wholly endorse the PHI. but I love my traditional pan.” (http://www.newsday.co.tt/features/0,98708.html).

Below is the Biography of the man himself.

Ken Philmore is from the island of Trinidad and Tobago, birthplace of the musical instrument, the steel-drum (a.k.a. steel pan). “Professor” is one of the top steel-drum soloists in the world. His fascination with the steel pan began when he was only four years old. In 1974, at age of fifteen, he joined the Hatters Steel Orchestra with the intention of developing his skills as a player. On one of his early visits, a member jokingly remarked “who is this young kid with these old fashioned glasses?”, referring to his bone rimmed spectacles, “he looks more like a ‘professor’ than a pan player”. This is an alias which Ken proudly carries today and aptly suits this gifted musician. In his first year with Hatters, he was selected for a tour to Minneapolis, U.S.A.

One year later, Ken began experimenting with arrangements of tunes for the group. As time progressed, his talents as player and arranger so impressed, that by 1982, he became musical director of one of the nation’s most prestigious steel orchestras. In ten years, he led them to six championships. In 1985, “Professor” did his first album – Our Heritage, which features a mixture of his version of jazz classics like Mr. Magic and Stardust, together with pan instrumentals of some popular calypsos. He was requested to play for Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Trinidad and Tobago that same year.

Since 1987, Ken has produced sixteen albums. Pan Calypso, Love in Steel, Pan Jamboree, Pan by Storm, Pan Ecstasy, Pan in the Party, All Night, Graduation, Jump up in the Road, Carnival is We, Mélange, Love for T&T, Proud Supporters, Cruizin, Time to Breakaway and Hooked. Five of these albums featured lead vocals by none other than the “Professor” himself. Ken has also achieved two National Panorama victories (2007 & 2008) in the medium category. His 2008 victory being with his very own composition, Hooked. He has performed and recorded with a number of international artistes such as Tito Puente, Ella Fitzgerald, Phyllis Hyman, Nancy Wilson, Tina Turner, Andy Narrell, Ralph Mc Donald, George Howard and jazz great, Lionel Hampton.

1989 was a memorable year for Ken “Professor” Philmore. He was honored by the ruling steel pan association, Pan Trinbago, as the most outstanding musical arranger. In New York, he received a special award for his contribution to music by Mayor Koch. Following his successes in Los Angeles and numerous standing ovations at Madison Square Garden in New York, “Professor” was invited by Mercer Ellington to join the prestigious Duke Ellington Orchestra for their tours to Europe and North America. On their album, Music is my Mistress, Ken was featured soloist on the selection “Queenie Pie Reggae”. Outstanding live performances continues unabated – Washington DC Pan Jazz Festival, St. Croix Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Barbados Jazz Festivals, Tobago Jazz Festival, Guyana Music Festival, Boston Symphony Hall among others.

Ken was privileged to be the first Trinidadian artiste to be featured at B.E.T. Jazz Central, where he was interviewed by Vanessa Rubin and the legendary Lou Rawls. He finished this session with a scintillating performance before a live audience.

The “Professor” is now a musical giant in his homeland, the US and Europe. Apart from Trinidad, he currently arranges music for steel bands both in New York and the United Kingdom. Young pannists and arrangers try to imitate his style. His impact on the pan arena has been nothing short of phenomenal and there are audiences yet to be exposed to his unique combination of dexterity and soothing runs on his “steel piano”, as he calls it.
