Trips for Kids - Metro DC

Trips for Kids - Metro DC Thanksgiving came early at Trips for Kids Metro DC. We're thankful that you all keep giving, so we can support the community. We had a great luncheon with 60 folks and a silent auction and kids from our program. Lovely time to get together and celebrate our successes.

See article below - As an FYI - TFK is leading the way in northern virginia in getting kid outdoors biking and walking to school with programs in 9 schools . best quote of the article

"The cost of putting a school bus on the street is approximately equal to keeping a teacher on staff, said Linda P. Farbry, director of... transportation for Fairfax public schools."

If parents were told that walking thier kids to school would get thier school another teacher, more kids would be walking Im sure.

Almost everyone has a grandparent who claims to have walked two miles to school every morning. Uphill. In the snow. Etc.

Trips for Kids - Metro DC Great ride today with the National Park Service touring the city. Yorshua read the open paragraph of the gettysburg address to the other children on the foot of the Lincoln memorial, then we rode to a location on pennsylvania ave where just over 100 years ago slaves were sold as part of the local market. It was quite moving. Amazing way to end the ride season. Thank you NPS.

Trips for Kids - Metro DC The city of Alexandria partnered with Trips for Kids Metro DC to facilitate a Safe Routes to School program at Mount Vernon Community School. Under this partnership, nearly 95% of the students participated in Walk to School Day during the schools very first event, then again for Earth Day and Walk to School Day in fall 2009. The culture of acceptance for walking and bicycling to school is starting to become the norm

Trips for Kids - Metro DC Prince William Forest - soul food for lost children. We reunited 12 young friends from trailer homes, basements and apartments. Seperated due to hardships, they enjoyed a day laughing together and clearing hazards from miles of hiking trails. Thier reward was supposed to be a nice ride and lunch, but most of them returned to TFK HQ to reminise, have dinner and goodby hugs. These days you can't script..
