We can't wait to see the total after our fall root crops are harvest at the end of this month. A significant harvest of carrots, beets and turnips is finishing up in the field right now!

My question, Farmer Dan: Can this be done in the Cully Neighborhood?

Good question Bob! I think this kind of "donation garden" could be implemented anywhere. It does take a few dedicated people to maintain the plot(s) and some volunteer coordination. It's been my experience over the past few years that growing in an urban setting using small plot intensive growing methods can produce vast amounts of vegetables in... See More a small space. While County CROPS is using about 2 acres of underutilized, surplus county land, this model could easily be implemented in the city on smaller plots. In some ways it's even easier to do because of the lovely microclimates available in the city. Urban growing also provides some protection from a variety of pests like rabbits and deer. Rabbits ate the tops off all of our carrots a few weeks ago at the CROPS site. (Darn those wascally wabbits!) I hope to explore urban agriculture options further after our season ends in November.

Fall and winter vegetables start in July and have to be in the ground by September. It depends which vegetable you are talking about though. Some need more time to develop before the days start getting short and cold.

Farmer Dan here...our prepping for winter will happen in stages over the next 2 months. Lots to do. Still seeding greens. Garlic will go in soon. Cover cropping with crimson clover will happen through mid October. Deliveries of grape pomace to manage for overwinter composting/sheet mulching...and so much more. Keep your eye on the Hands On Greater Portland website for more volunteer opportunities opening up in October and November.

Multnomah County CROPS Farm Snow-Cap Community Charities is the distribution point for CROPS produce. Dave, their warehouse manager, tells me that our fresh produce is flying off their shelves. Snow-Cap also provides cooking support, samples and recipe ideas for how to use the veggies. For example, today's sample recipe is zucchini bread. Mmmmmm...
