Truman State University Press "Deaths on Pleasant Street" won the 2009 Historic Book of the Year from the Jackson County Historical Society. Author Gles Fowler recieved the award for his extraordinary contribution to local history and for preserving and understanding the county's heritage.

He is interviewed in the series and served as an advisor to Ken Burns for the film.
