In the first week of June I ran my dogs 35 km to Kap Hodgson and back for our last run of the season. It was a beautiful day as we edged two glaciers and I took time to stop and reflect on the past year.

Cool thanks. So why should I buy these instead of the Denali Evo Ascent? I'm a mountaineer and use them for approaches. I weigh 200 and carry a 40lb pack

So glad you asked! First and foremost, the ActiveFit binding on the Mountaineer is much more secure. The control Wing design (the plastic wings that hold the heel strap) keep your foot aligned properly, and the dual pull system is both easy and completely secure. You will have no twisting, loosening or sloppiness in the binding.

Second, with a properly sized snowshoe (at 240 lbs. with gear I would suggest you use a size 30 Mountaineer), you will have balanced flotation - i.e. the extra flotation come from adding surface area all around the snowshoe, not just by slapping on extra length at the back. If you are a skier, you can imagine that simply adding extra length to the back of your skis will throw you completely out of balance.

Third, the Viper/Python crampon system on the Mountaineer is far more aggressive, and if you are spending much time above treeline in icy, uneven terrain, secure traction is extremely important. ... Read More
