FILM SYNOPSIS
Under the Bombs (2007)
Director: Philippe Aractingi
Language: Lebanese (with English subtitles)
Running time: 97minutes
Classification: U
Conceived and shot in the heat of the moment in Lebanon during the summer of 2006, and with only four actors, UNDER THE BOMBS depicts Zeina's determined search for her son. Zeina is Shiite, and has emigrated from Lebanon to Dubai. She is accompanied by Toni, who is Christian and dreams of leaving the country. But, back in Lebanon to try to save her son, she realises she doesn't want to leave anymore. Despite the dangers surrounding them (or perhaps because of the constant possibility of death) Toni and Zeina's love for each other remains strong.
The Syrian Bride (2004)
Director: Eran Riklis
Language: Arabic, English, Hebrew, Russian (with English subtitles)
Running time: 97 minutes
Classification: U
Mona lives in Majdal Shams, the largest Druze village in the Golan Heights on the Israeli-Syrian border. She is engaged to be married to Tallel, who works in Damascus but they have never met each other because of the occupation of the area by Israel since 1967. When Mona moves to Syria, she will lose her undefined nationality and will never be allowed to return home.
Mona's father Hammed is a political pro-Syrian activist who is being monitored by the Israeli government. His older son Hatten married a Russian woman eight years ago and was banished from Majdal Shams by his father and the religious leaders in his community. Hatten's brother Marwan is a trader living in Italy. Their sister Amal has two teenage daughters and wants to attend a university, but her marriage with Amin is in crisis. When the family tries to gather for Mona's wedding, unreasonable bureaucracy jeopardises the ceremony.
War Child (2008)
Directed By: Christian Karim Chrobog
Language: English
Running time: 92 minutes
Classification: PG13
Left home at the age of seven/one year later I‘m carryin’ an Ak-47.” For hip hop artist Emmanuel Jal, a former child soldier in Sudan‘s brutal civil war, these lyrics are hardly empty posturing. They are the bitter reality of a young man who was “forced to sin” but determined to “never give up and never give in.” Today, wounded but still hopeful, he fights a new battle: bringing peace to his beloved Sudan and building schools in Africa. This time, his weapon is a microphone. See why audiences from New York to Berlin to London rave about the award-winning film, War Child, and have embraced the hip-hop artist with a terrifying past and a gentle soul. Interspersing original interviews, live concerts, and rare footage of Jal as a seven year-old boy, War Child will make viewers cry, laugh, dance, and celebrate the power of hope.
Resolution 819 (2008)
Directed by: Giacomo Battiato
Language: French, some English & Serbian (with English subtitles)
Running time: 96 minutes
Classification: 18PL
Resolution 819 was adopted by the Security Council at its 3199th meeting on April 16th, 1993. Based on true events, Resolution 819 tells the compelling story of a young investigator sent to Bosnia in 1995 to investigate the disappearance of 8,000 men in Srebrenica which eventually brings the perpetrators of the massacre to justice at the International Criminal Court.
Benoît Magimel stars as Jacques Calvez, a man of integrity who refuses to let politicians, mobsters or bureaucrats stand in his way. He receives valuable help in his quest from Lherbier (Hippolyte Girardot) a French secret service agent, and forensic anthropologist Clara Kofsky (Karolina Gruszka).
