Ukraine
Любіть Україну, як сонце любіть!
Як вітер, і трави, і води!
В годину щасливу і радості мить,
Любіть у годину негоди...

Ukraine is an ancient nation located in the geographic center of Europe, although it is often considered a part of Eastern Europe. Ukraine is slightly larger than France by geographic area and is the largest country located entirely in continental Europe.

Many scholars believe that central-western Ukraine was the most likely source of origin for all of the Slavic nations of Europe. Ukraine has very rich land and has long been considered "the bread-baskett of Europe". It possesses one third of the entire Earth's rich black soil and has an ancient agricultural tradition. According to the latest anthropology research, horses were originally domesticated by humans on the territory of central Ukraine.

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine is over1,600 years old, and was the largest city in Europe in the Middle Ages. It was the center of Kyivan Rus, a large and powerful confederation of Eastern Slavic principalities that included Ukraine, Belarus and a small part of today's Russia.

The rebirth of Ukraine occured with the rise of the Kozak (Cossack) State, called the Hetmanate, in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many nations have wrestled for control of Ukraine throughout the centuries, including Mongolia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Turkey and Germany. The Southern Coast of Ukraine is dotted with cities that were started by Greek settlers and later belonged to the Roman Empire.

Ukraine has a very long history and a very rich culture. Its people are known for their warm hospitality and Ukrainian women are considered among the most beautiful in the world.

Historical Note:
The first recorded use of the name Ukraine is from 1189, but it was most likely used orally long before that time, interchangeably with the name Rus (Ruthenia). Most Ukrainians called themselves Rusyns (Ruthenians) until the Tsardom of Muscovy changed its name to Russian Empire. To avoid confusion, most Ukrainians switched to the exclusive use of the name Ukraine and Ukrainian.
