University of Evansville Purple Aces Soccer

A very good season could turn into a very special season this weekend for the University of Evansville soccer team. Coach Mike Jacobs' Purple Aces are two victories away from earning an automatic berth in next week's NCAA Tournament.

The #4 seed Aces take on #1 Missouri State in the first semifinal match of the State Fa...rm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Friday at 3:30 CST at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines, Iowa. #2 Drake meets #3 Creighton in the other semifinal at 6:00, and the winners meet Sunday at 1:05 in the championship match that will be televised live by Fox Sports Midwest. Evansville takes an 11-7-1 overall record and 5-4-1 league record into Friday's match against Missouri State. Senior Day is Saturday when the Aces host Bradley at 4:30, and Sam Bornstein, Reggie Edu, Dan Gibson, Ally Mackay and Dan Gibson can take a bow for what they've done to lift the program. The five represent the first full recruiting class that fourth-year coach Mike Jacobs and his staff brought to UE, and will leave as... the most successful in recent history. The final week of the regular season for Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer has arrived, and now it's all about the numbers.



For the fourth place University of Evansville Purple Aces, two victories to finish the regular season and help from fifth place Eastern Illinois could produce an MVC championship. Victories i...n league matches are worth three points and ties are worth one. Missouri State leads the MVC with a 6-1-1 record (19 points), followed by 5-3-0 Drake (15), 4-2-3 Creighton (15) and the 4-3-1 Aces (13). LUTTRULL, LYNCH CHOSEN AS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA FINALISTS University of Evansville soccer players Robby Lynch and Mike Luttrull have a lot in common. Both are juniors from the Indianapolis area, both made the all-Missouri Valley Conference and all-Midwest Region Teams last year, and both are key figures on the Aces' 1...0-6-1 squad this year. Now there's another link between the two. Lynch and Luttrull are finalists for the Academic All-America Division I Men's Soccer Team, which will be announced in four weeks. Evansville is the only school with two members on the 11-man District 5 All-Academic First Team. All 11 now become finalists for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Lynch, from Carmel, Ind. and a graduate of Carmel High School, has a 3.58 grade point average and is majoring in exercise science. Luttrull, from Indianapolis and a graduate of Avon High School, has a 3.82 GPA and is majoring in accounting. Lynch ranks fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference in assists (5), sixth in points (13) and seventh in goals (4). Luttrull ranks second in the league in game-winning goals (2), third in goals (5) and 10th in shots (30). Both have been starters since their freshman season. They are two big reasons why the Aces reached 10 victories quicker this season than any year since 1996, and why the Aces have produced four consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1989 to 1992. UE has two regular season matches remaining, Wednesday at league leading Missouri State and Saturday at home against Bradley.
