Newsflash: Terror Suspects Arrested on University Park Campus

It has come to the attention of impact that two men were arrested on Wednesday morning at University Park Campus under the Terrorism Act, police have confirmed.

The men involved, one aged 30, and the other 22, are both being questioned by Nottinghamshire Police. It is reported that one is a current student and the other a former student, the campus premises connected with them are currently being searched.

A uniformed presence is in place at the Trent Building and various management premises. Jonathan Ray, Director of Communications at the University has given his assurance that the University "has been co-operating fully from the outset throughout the enquiry"

Nottingham Police have stressed that there is no risk to the university community.

ELECTIONS WILL TAKE PLACE WEDNESDAY 30th APRIL AT OUR 3RD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY FOR ALL EDITORS!

All nominations must be left in the slot provided on the door of the Impact office, the deadline for nominations to be submitted is 5pm on Monday April 27th.

Senior Editorial Positions may make a speech of up to two minutes duration.
General Editorial Positions may make a speech of up to one minute.

For advice and details on election speeches please email magazine@impactnottingham.com or ask one of your section editors who will be happy to advise you.
All current editors must be re-elected into their position if they wish to maintain them next year.

As you can see it's an action packed day, but crucially ATTENDANCE IS ONLY COMPULSORY FROM 1.00 pm to 2.30pm, we hope this will make the whole affair far less stressful! But please stay and support the officers running and vote if you are able to stay.

If you CANNOT attend the elections because of year abroad/ chronic illness/ work experience then you are still allowed, nay, encouraged to run. Write out a speech and nominate someone to read it for you. Many people have been elected this way, regardless of attendance so please don’t worry if you really can’t make it.

PLEASE NOTE:
The constitutional changes laid out at the Managing Editor elections still apply.
The only change made will be the provisional removal of the Deputy Editor position, to be replaced by Editor-In-Chief and Editor.
Please note, Editor-In-Chief will now be a content-based role as the administrative duties once performed by the Editor-In-Chief will now be performed by the Managing Editor.
The Editor is a supportive role to the Editor-In-Chief.
There will also be a second Science Editor position available.
We are abolishing the role of Media Manager, as this will be taken over by the Associate Managing Editor.

All constitutional changes will be made clear on April 30th.

Any other suggestions are welcome!

TO BE ELECTED THERE ARE NO PREREQUISITES, BUT IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN INVOLVED IN IMPACT BEFORE, YOU WILL PROBABLY BE ASKED ABOUT THIS AFTER YOUR SPEECH.

Monday 25th February saw the 2008 Varsity Series get underway with the ice hockey taking place. The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University squared off for the showpiece event at Nottingham Arena. Well over 5000 fans swarmed to the venue, guaranteeing the largest ice hockey varsity ever outside of North America.

What’s strange about this match-up is that normally, Uni and Trent play as a combined team, the Nottingham Mavericks. The Varsity occasion allows team-mates to go at it on the ice for one night only, with more than the fair share of big hits delivered over the course of the evening. A first for 2008 was URN covering the match with full live commentary from the city centre venue.

The match itself took a long time to get going, the first two periods ended goalless with only a string of saves at either end providing anything worthy of a highlight reel. Eventually in the third period some goals arrived, Trent opened the scoring with a speculative one time goal that caught players, fans and the Trent bench by surprise. With Uni pressing for an equaliser Trent doubled their lead near the end with a swift counter attack meaning the game was effectively over. Trent then closed it out to being this year’s series with a 2-0 victory.

Finally, spare a thought for the outgoing AU Officer, Phil Richards, he may have won the second period shoot the puck challenge, but he stacked it in the process, giving the Trent fans more cause for banter

The importance of clothes - for the man

When faced with the age old fashion dilemma- a seemingly full wardrobe yet absolutely nothing to wear- I’ve often looked upon the various garments strewn over my bedroom floor and found myself thinking ‘Boys have it so easy’. Going to uni? Just throw on some jeans and a t-shirt. Going to Ocean? Jeans and a t-shirt will suffice. Even if heading out on a date? Jeans and a (slightly nicer) t-shirt still make the grade. It seems there is a common misconception that there is something very un-masculine about caring too much about what you put on your body, men having to face the ‘metrosexual’ label if they do. But, in a recent survey of what women look for on a first date, ‘being well dressed’ polled in the top 5 of most important features, and US Maxim fashion editor, Stan Williams, affirms this by saying ‘women recognize a man who dresses well - they can pick that guy out of the crowd.’ So there’s the proof; caring about the way you dress is not a compromise of masculinity, boys-it’s time to rethink that jeans and t-shirt combination. For Spring 2008 the major looks for the men are high-tech sportswear-inspired fabrics, classic tailoring, folk style romanticism and 90s minimal looks. The key colours you need in your wardrobe are black, white, grey, electric blue, orange and uniform green. Patterns should be kept minimal, restricting them to vests under plainer layers or on scarves and accessories. As for trousers, they should be kept slim and shaped and turned up at the ends making them a key feature. To combat the Spring chill, layers are a crucial aspect of any guys outfit, with waistcoats over knitwear, vests over long sleeved jerseys and voluminous scarves making a strong appearance. So then boys, it would appear its time for a trip into town (or internet shopping if you’re really that lazy) because the student loan isn’t just for beer and kebabs- it’s for shopping too!

Ruth Hazard
