Utah Humanities Council Civil rights have come "a mighty long way." Carlotta Walls LaNier will be at the Book Festival to tell her story of breaking segregation in the Deep South of the 60s at Little Rock, together with local Pastor France Davis for an open discussion. Saturday, Oct 24 at the Main Library, 1:30-2:30 pm.

Available for purchase August 25, 2009! President Bill Clinton penned the foreword to this memoir about the youngest member of the historic Little Rock Nine, the group of brave young African American students who integrated Little Rock Central High School on September 25, 1957. Carlotta Walls LaNier offers her first...-ever personal and detailed account of that first day of school as a 14-year-old student who, along with the other eight students, was assailed with threats and insults by segregationists. The Little Rock Nine made headlines and carved out their spot in the Civil Rights Movement on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling to desegregate schools across the United States. The nine students faced a tumultuous road in the pursuit of education as Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to bar the students from attending the school, which kicked off a polarizing standoff between the segregationists and integrationists that eventually led to President Dwight D. Eisenhower intervening by sending the 101st Airborne Division to quiet the crowds and escort the students into school. The memoir is co-written by Lisa Frazier Page, author of bestseller “The Pact: Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream.” The New Orleans native is the articles editor for The Washington Post Magazine, and has also worked as a columnist and editor of The Washington Post’s Prince George’s Extra. Utah Humanities Council Like chick lit, romance, or books for teenage girls? Check out Shannon Hale! This local author will be featured at the Book Festival on October 24 at 4:30 in a panel with Sara Zarr. Books of hers in discussion will be The Actor and the Housewife, Book of a Thousand Days and Forest Born.

Shannon's mother says she was a storyteller from birth, jabbering endlessly in her carriage as the two strolled through the neighborhood; once she could form complete sentences, she made up stories, bribing her younger siblings to perform them in mini plays. When she was ten, she began writing books, mostly fantasy sto...ries where she was the heroine, and she continued writing secretly for years while pursuing acting in stage and improv comedy. After detours studying in Mexico, the U.K, and Paraguay, Shannon earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Utah and a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. In the interim, she submitted short stories and novels to magazines and publishers, saving all her rejection letters which she has since laminated into one continuous 10-foot roll which is proudly unfurls to audiences as a testament to her dedication and determination. Since the publication of her first book, The Goose Girl, in 2003, Shannon has become a beloved author to young readers as well as booksellers and educators. Her third novel, Princess Academy, earned her a Newbery Honor and is a The New York Times, Book Sense, and Publisher's Weekly bestseller. Shannon has also written two books for adults, Austenland and The Actor and the Housewife. Shannon lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband, Dean, their two children, Max and Maggie, and their pet, a small plastic pig. "Shannon Hale's book blow me away.
