Valley Industry & Commerce Association Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the city’s soon-to-be councilmember (current Assemblymember) and connect with the Valley’s top business leaders. Hosted beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided for guests. Cost for the event is $20 for VICA members, but is complimentary for Circle of Influence Members. Non-members pay $50.

Valley Industry & Commerce Association VICA celebrated its 60th Anniversary, installed a new board and officers, elected Daymond Rice (Vons) as its 2010-2011 chair and honored some of its most outstanding members Thursday at the 60th Annual Meeting. Rice will replace current chair Greg Lippe (Lippe, Hellie, Hoffer & Allison, LLP) who served as board chair f...rom 2008-2009. James Garrison (Pacific Federal Insurance Corp.) received the 16th Annual Harmon Ballin Community Service Award; Ralph Tarr (Attorney at Law) was the recipient of the 4th Annual President's Award and the 31st Robert E. Gibson Corporate Award of Excellence was presented to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. Attendees also heard from Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO who is seeking the Republican nomination for Governor. Whitman shared her extensive business experience and how she plans to focus on education, easing regulation and job creation to help fix many of California’s problems.

Whitman will share her business expertise and vision for California. Several awards will be given to some of the Valley’s outstanding business leaders. Valley Industry & Commerce Association State Senator Alex Padilla joined VICA members to provide an update about recent activities in Sacramento. The Senator discussed the importance of the recently-passed water package, calling it the AB 32 of water. He addressed proposed government reforms that could help Sacramento operate more effectively. Padilla also ...told attendees about his work on legislation to ban the sale of tobacco products near schools. The VICA After Dark reception was presented by Camacho’s Cantina and Metropolitan Water District. Co-sponsors for the event included, Tower General Contractors and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Valley Industry & Commerce Association L.A. City Councilmember Tony Cardenas joined VICA members for a Newsmaker Connection breakfast. The exclusive question and answer session addressed topics ranging from business tax reform to the city’s gang problem and prevention activities. Cardenas told attendees about his work with various intervention and preventio...n organizations and how gang violence impacts the business community. A member’s question inspired Cardenas to hold a business conference to connect service providers that train former gang members for entrance into the workforce with the business owners who need to staff their companies. He promised to bring the idea to fruition soon and invite VICA members to participate in the event. The breakfast was presented by State Farm Insurance and Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, and co-sponsored by MWW Group and The McCarty Company.

Councilmember Koretz provided attendees with an overview of his activities during his first several months in office and what he would like to focus on throughout his term. He told VICA members t...hat he plans to work with his colleagues on the council to make the city friendlier to business, implementing permit streamlining processes and other tactics used when he was a West Hollywood City Councilmember. Koretz also addressed the recent water main breaks across the city, and told VICA members that it is time for LADWP to make significant infrastructure repairs and updates. The event was hosted by D’Cache’ Restaurant and presented by Genton Barth.
