Amber Guerl

Amber Guerl Hello, I just moved back to BC after living abroad for a few years. When did it change that you no longer have to be licensed to work as a hairstylist in B.C? Maybe my info is wrong but I went to apply at a salon on Friday and told them I am getting my license back as soon as possible - I let it go while I was moved ou...t of country - and they told me I didn't need to get relicensed. I was flabbergasted! Is this true or are they just saying this? I am going to get relicensed either way, but I want to know if they are just B.S'ing me.

Welcome Back Amber!...It is true....unfortunately. It is not a requirement to hold a BC licence to work in the Cosmetology field. This "law" changed in 2003-2004. If you do wish to be "relicenced" all you have to do is apply for a new Certificate (This will not have an expiry date). Contact Heather at 604-877-4603 and she will be please to assist you.

Christina

Christina Hello!! I am a cosmetologist/makeup artist living in Bermuda. I have been here 4 + years and need to take some classes to get involved, updated, excited in the industry again (as I am also thinking of moving back to Canada.) I am a Canadian citizen and hold a licence from BC. (2000) I am considering a visit to Vancou...ver Island in Feb or March 2010 - are there any classes in the area (preferably Victoria, Duncan, Vancouver) at that time? I'm also considering attending the ABA in Toronto Feb28th but can't find much info on what stage shows there will be other than Vidal sassoon. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Christina...I would suggest getting in contact with some of the suppliers on the Island for class information. Cosmoprof, Kingdom Beauty, Nova Beauty are just a few to check out. As for the Toronto ABA, there is a link to the show program just above the information on Sassoon. Hopefully this helps.

Bunny-Bee

Bunny-Bee I want to go get my hair cut.but since this flu
going around and on Vancouver Island a few deaths from it.I am worried about
going to any hair dressing shop..I have only ever seen one hair dresser who washed their hands before attending a client and between
clients..come to think of it..the washing of hands between cli...ents in hair
dressing school was not something that was emphasized on either....I believe
considering the H1N1 and the health of our clients ever precaution possible
should be enforced with every hairdresser..and another thing to,using the same
cape from one person to another is something that should be looked at in the
industry..a inexpensive disposable cape would be nice..

Great comments! We understand many people share these concerns. The CIABC has created a program to educate the cosmetology industry on proper sanitation and infection control practices and procedures. "BeautySafe" will be launched in the New Year and will address all these concerns.

As for your concerns with cutting and colour capes. If properly ... See Moredraped, a cape should not touch a client’s neck. A Sanex strip or a towel should always be placed around a client’s neck before the cape is draped.

Hope this helps.

It is no longer a requirement to hold a licence to work in the cosmetology industry in BC, however it is highly recommended. If you wish to obtain a Certificate of Qualification, you will need to show proof of training from a school or through an apprenticing program. If you have met the required hours you can sit for the exam and if successfully completed receive a Certificate of Qualification. I suggest calling Veronica in the exams department at 604-877-4604 for more information.

does the not holding a license include all provinces? I am licensed for BC (16 years and counting) but reside in Alberta and haven't worked for quite a few years now due to not having the Alberta license.
