Vancouver Art Gallery FUSE-goers were thrust into a world of opposing forces on October 23rd, with music, performance and art that thrilled and chilled. Thrill the World Vancouver pit Michael Jackson-inspired zombie moves against the joyous gyrations of the UBC Girlz Bhangra Team. Renowned Vancouver writer Michael Turner went go laptop-to-...laptop with artist Allison Hrabluik in a duel of projected spontaneous prose. Attendees let their inner angel or undead brain-eater shine with the help of movie make-up artists. Montreal-based performers 2boys.tv took FUSE-ers to the dark side, and influential indie-rockers Mecca Normal let loose with eerie guitar riffs that reverberated throughout the Gallery. Along with four floors of new exhibitions, and drinks and one of the city’s hottest DJs in the FUSE Lounge, the Vancouver Art Gallery was the place to be last Friday night!

With more than 2000 attendees at FUSE on Friday, the line to get into the lounge was a wee bit long. This is when being a Member of the Gallery’s Young Associates (YA!) came in handy. By flashing their credentials, YA!-ers jumped the cue and walk right in to join the party. ...

Vancouver Art Gallery From October 3, 2009 to January 3, 2010, the Vancouver Art Gallery will present a major exhibition of work by Scott McFarland, the internationally renowned Canadian photographer whose images challenge the fundamental idea of what a photograph can be.

Embracing techniques of digital manipulation, McFarland’s strikingly b...eautiful landscapes are composites of numerous photos, seamlessly stitched and layered to create exquisitely detailed large-scale works. Positioning his camera in a single spot, he rotates it slowly, taking numerous photos of sections of the same location over long periods, sometimes up to a year or more. He then uses a digital photo editor to combine multiple exposures into extremely sharp and detailed images that appear at first glance to be created in the single click of the shutter.

Questioning the assumption that photographs represent decisive moments, the artist’s images promote the medium’s ability to depict complex realities of space and the passage of time.

Comprised of more than 60 rigorously composed large-scale photos produced over the past seven years, the exhibition includes 14 works presented for the first time.

Looking forward to seeing the evolution of Scott's work; in a setting where the links from one subject area to another and one time frame to another can be seen. It's the space between the bodies of work that we don't get to examine except in this kind of "career to date" show.
