The Center, located in Nashville, TN, is a group of community service projects whose goal is to support people working at the grassroots level to take control of their physical, social, political, and environmental health.

The Center for Health Services is an outgrowth of the Appalachian Student Health Coalition, which formed in 1969 when a group of Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt students organized a community outreach program led by student and community volunteers

Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Three Nashville community leaders will be honored at the second annual Celebration of Women Mentoring Women, highlighting some of the unseen work in our community and encouraging all women to mentor those around them.

The awards luncheon will take place on Friday, February 27, 2009, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Loews Vander...bilt Hotel.

The honorees are:
• The Rev. Mary K. “Kaki” Friskics-Warren, GivingMatters.com Director at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee
• Valerie Montgomery-Rice, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine, Meharry Medical College
• Martha A. Burton, teacher of Early Childhood Educations and Family and Consumer Sciences at Pearl-Cohn Comprehensive Business Magnet School.

Proceeds for the event will support Vanderbilt University’s Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker (MIHOW) program, which is built on the principles of empowering women from low income households to gain confidence, self-sufficiency, and access to health and social services.

MIHOW is a partnership between the Vanderbilt University Center for Health Services and community based organizations in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia.
