To give voice, to be the voice, to have a voice: Collin Kelley's Conquering Venus has less to do with what happens and everything to do with what the characters say and the consequences of their words as they are set into motion.Words are things, and while it is possible to forget how much they...

It sounds fascinating, Vanessa; I will have to delve into this.
What you said about words is true. Even the Bible says "Life and death are in the power of the tongue."
Happy New Year, Vanessa!

The heartbreaking reality of most suffering is that it occurs in silence, behind the closed doors of our neighbors, co-workers, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers. The horrible fact of human trafficking is that its victims are the most vulnerable amongst us...

Like many people who have seen your recent posting, I am in a state of disassociative denial, but not because I want to be. I cannot begin to fathom the effects of this practice on the collective unconcious, let alone its victims. While there is little I can say to underscore the importance of your posting,
I am hoping that awareness you have provided will evolve into global mandate.

Yes, absolutely; it's an invisible epidemic that is deeply and profoundly disturbing. Hopefully the issue will become more on the forefront of the news cycle & that by discussing it & learning about it we can all contribute in some way.

I've always felt photographs are a form of time-travel. I find it impossible to look at a photo like the one which accompanies your writing here without it triggering memories, especially true for the people captured within. We all have our own photographs like this, that take us back to a distinct time and place, and to the feelings and thoughts ... See Morethat exist there. They retell a story, they remind us. It can be a very beautiful thing.

I love this form of time-travel. Thanks for sharing yours with us here.

Thank you all for your great responses & insights -

Absolutely, total Ivy Leaguer. In fact, I was quite bookish but always managed to have fun & not get into (too much) trouble : )

Leonard Cohen was my driving creative influence throughout high school & college... His poetic approach to songwriting was what struck me most, & has always guided me - I didn't know that about Juliette Greco & Miles!! I'll be Googling that, no doubt -... See More

I feel the same way about photographs, and music as well. They both share a sense of time as it relates to message, fixed in that moment when the camera clicks and the song is recorded. I think that a song & a photograph project a similar sense of our collective sub-conscience in a way that a painting, for instance, perhaps does not since the materials used - paint, brush, canvas - are somewhat removed from our general experience of the world -

Thank you Denise - I love digging into the history of words, the process often reveals hidden shades of meaning that have long been lost. It's something I'm very aware of when I record & sing: every word has meaning, and in a song or poem - unlike life - there is no such thing as a careless or tossed-off word...
