you have no idea Lawrence. NYTimes.com wrote an article about 4-5 years ago regarding the fact that Vermont has THE MOST natural waterslides in the USA...It's an amazing state around each corner!

Nothing beats Vermont. :) And I'm glad they're doing a program similar to our "No Child Left Inside" program here in Connecticut, where families compete for points by doing activities all around the state. It's an awesome way to increase awareness and involvement.

Green River allows 1-night reservations, which are handled thru the park only at 802-888-1349;

Osmore Pond is first-come/first-served; Kettle Pond has a 2-night minimum reservation, but you can check availability (802-426-3042) then just show up and stay one night, without making a reservation;... Read More

If you get to the park via your own power (paddle, hike, bike) you can make a 1-night reservation in ANY park, including Woods, Knight and Burton Islands (802-524-6353).

Mindi

Mindi Can the Venture Vermont Challenge be completed by a family or must an individual accomplish the 250 points?

Mindi
Mindi
It actually does say this explicitly on the website. If you click on the link to the challenge page, it states this detail at the bottom of the page.

VSP - this might be something to think about. Maybe make up a special family challenge option. The packets are long and it seems to be a waste of paper for all family members to have to print them out. A family challenge could be done in exchange for a car load pass, perhaps.
Vermont State Parks

We'll consider that. One downside is that the car pass would only work for park entry when the whole family is together in one vehicle. For instance, if an individual family member wanted to ride their bike or walk to the park, or came in a different vehicle, they couldn't get in.

Vermont State Parks BREAKING NEWS: Whitewater Release on the West River, Jamaica State Park this weekend! Normally there is only one spring and one fall release, so whitewater paddlers will get a special treat this weekend paddling in warm summer temps. Release will begin Friday morning and wind down Sunday afternoon. Tell your paddling friends and go to Jamaica to watch the fun!

Source: www.vtstateparks.com
Previously, the area had supported a few small farms and a sawmill. The West River Railroad ran through the park. The old railroad bed is now used as the trail that leads along the West River to Ball Mountain Dam. The railroad operated from about 1879 until 1927, when a flood wiped most of it out.

Dwight Gies

Dwight Gies dropped off 105, went by South America Pond, and come out near Maidstone S.P. Met a guy training his bear hunting dogs. He was lost. So was I. Trials and rough roads going in every direction. What's the story back there? Might need to make a Maidstone Reservation soon and go explore.

Can't wait to go to the island next month!
Chara

This is my "One Particular Harbor" that Jimmy Buffet and his crew sang about so well. For the past 8 years I've known that no matter where I go, no matter where I end up, Burton Island will always be "home" to me. It is the subconscious home I've had my entire life.
It is where I am when I'm truly alive and it is where I will rebirth when I die. ... Read MoreAlthough I've been around the world, and will continue to do so, it is my personal grounding spot, filled with all the love, energy, and magic that is life and what it holds. And it's right in my own backyard, who would have "thunk" it?? :)
Saying goodbye to it was EXTREMELY painful (although made worse by circumstance). We've got a pass for the season and are hoping to make several day trips, if at all possible, even for a few hours, but it's not the same.
Chara
Chara
Rochelle, which site are you at? Are you a first timer or since I see you're a local gal, which site is your favorite? I truly hope you have the best weather (something we don't seem to be blessed with on the years we're at "Alder")!
Rochelle
Rochelle
Not a first timer. This year I'm at Hickory for a few days, then Pine, but Juniper is my favorite, by far. I hope the weather is good too, but with a lean-to, it doesn't matter that much. Maybe we'll see you out there!
