Village Herbalist Wee Lesson Of The Day: Vitamin D that comes from food or supplements requires conversion by the liver, then by the kidneys so these organs must be healthy, however exposing the skin to sunlight, even the face & arms for 10 minutes 3 times per week causes direct creation of “D”. If a person is low, try fatty salt water ...fish like salmon, sardines, halibut & cod, milk, cheese, butter, egg yolks, alfalfa, oatmeal & kelp.

The important thing is to make sure the skin is free of lotions, oils, etc. prior to sun exposure for better processing. The lotions actually cause blockage to the healthy rays causing the chemical reaction needed to produce Vitamin D.

Village Herbalist Got a call from a small town community college nearby. The 'Healing With Nutrition' class that we offered has *50* people attending! Class is for three hours two monday nights. I like teaching the smaller groups too, but I think this deserves a big 'hurrah'! People are literally hungry for this information. What a great trend, true health care!

Ooo the omelets sound good. Plenty of herbs in them? What do you like to add?
Come visit for some classes during salmon season and you can satisfy at least two urges. I have some beautiful, crunchy, tasty kelp I can send you that is high in D vitamins until then!

Village Herbalist We hear about polyphenols in the media, telling us green tea, wine and chocolate are good sources. The best studied polyphenols however are the flavonoids which include anthocyanidins such as in bilberries and isoflavones of daidzein and genistein found in red clover. Bilberry jam and red clover infusion; sounds like science has just validated granny wisdom!

Village Herbalist Folks may know, I am against the use of plastic in and around our food, garden and herbs. Here is someone elses rant on the subject for the same reasons, but speaks of contamination of our food from a completely different source. Bisphenol A, or BPA, is linked to things like cancer, obesity, attention deficit disorder and genital abnormalities, and it’s been found in our food.

For those that would like to take it a bit deeper, a much better, and still simple, primer is Thomas Elpel's book: Botany in a Day.

Village Herbalist Considering it will not cover natural healthcare, and would be manditory, how do you feel and what do you think about the health care bill?

I think it is very frightening. I think it would lead to mandatory protocols both prophylactic and procedurally, eliminating any emphasis on treating the individual rather than the disease and adding to the acceptance of drug maintenance rather than looking to heal causes of illness. I think we need to put healing back into the hands of the community rather than the government, insurance companies, and big pharma. But thats all fairly easy for me to say....

I am like Teri - I oppose it and would oppose any government involvement on health care. In fact, I think the system has been corrupted, with the influence of the AMA eradicating their competition (us!), and the further influence of Big Pharma on the FDA. When competition is erased, the prices are artificially high, and that is where (yikes) ... See Moreinsurance comes in. We need to take our responsibility, and therefore our power, back! I also like the idea of the way China arranges health care - the patient doesn't pay unless they are WELL. Wouldn't THAT change a lot of things? :-)

Village Herbalist Dandelion & burdock harvest time. Both contain glycosides, flavinoids, volatile oils, saponins, polysaccharides including inulin, mucilage, minerals & vitamins. Some of which extract in both alcohol & water, some in low alcohol or water. Get the most out of them: extract in 40%-80 proof alcohol. With the moisture conte...nt of the roots, results in a 20-30% alcohol extract, measured with a hydrometer. Should be perfect!

Village Herbalist Wee Lesson Of The Day: Herbs that are Tonic improve the tone and strength of tissues, increasing the function of one or more body systems. Choose the right one for the type of tissues you are working on. Burdock, Dandelion, Nettle and Raspberry are just a few. Thank goodness many herbs are tonic herbs and are very safe to use.

Dandelion and burdock are loaded with the plant chemical inulin. This is tonic to the pancreas, and the whole endocrine system. If you listen to The Village Herbalist on herbmentor.com have a listen to the lesson called 'Blood Sugar!' I think you will enjoy it!
