Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program “With IP being taken out of the procurement loop, supply has completely overshadowed demand like no one has ever seen in the timber business,” Howell said. “Right now it’s just dire straits for everybody in the logging business because the other mills in our area do not have any additional room for consumption. They just can’t take the overflow of the wood that was being sent here (to Franklin).”

Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program I don't see many snakes in the mountains of Virginia, at least not compared to the number I saw while working in Florida and SW Georgia. If you're interested in learning about snakes, visit Dave Steen's blog at: http://networkedblogs.com/p14574886

Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program This afternoon I begin my whirlwind tour of Virginia via the Fall Forestry & Wildlife Field Tours. I'm off to Southampton County for the first of the 2009 series, which is tomorrow. There's still room available for all the tours, and full scholarships for K-12 teachers. If you'd like to join us, visit http://www.cnr.vt.edu/forestupdate/pages/field_tours.htm for a registration brochure.

Interesting article on forest certification. My take? Wood is like food - the more local it is, the more sustainable it is. Wood harvested in your county, whether it's certified or not, is much more sustainable than certified wood harvested in New Zealand. Think about the transportation costs, fuel, etc. it takes to get logs half-way across the world!
