Virginia Leadership Institute, Inc. VLI held an all day training in April 2008 on technology in politics, election law, candidate experiences, grassroots operations and immigration.

Virginia Leadership Institute, Inc. VLI trained over 25 future candidates and campaign professionals in fundraising, lessons learned from Election 2008, basics of a campaign, and other critical skills in April 2009.

Virginia Leadership Institute, Inc. In April 2009, VLI joined with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority to conduct a training session for over 50 future campaign professionals and future political candidates.

Virginia Leadership Institute, Inc. The VLI honored Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, former Richmond Republican Party Chair Courtney Malveaux, and former Delegate Winsome Earle-Sears, for being trailblazers for African Americans in politics in Virginia.

Attendees will participate in an interactive conversation to evaluate how closely their traits and experi...ences match the various roles needed for a campaign. They will learn what information and planning is needed to become a candidate and evaluate whether they are ready to run for office.
Campaign Basics
9:55-10:25 a.m.
This session will provide information on the key components of a campaign. Candidates will learn what steps it takes to run a campaign from the announcement of a candidacy to the election. This overview will include a discussion of how to get on the ballot, selecting campaign staff, utilizing the media, and preparing for Election Day.
Grassroots Organization Panel – Lessons from Election 2008
10:30-11:30 a.m.
The panel will discuss the important role of local level organizations in the 2008 elections. Panelists will also share tips on how to mobilize volunteers for campaign efforts. The focus will be on how to tap into the skills of supporters in order to enhance the candidate’s campaign.
Networking Lunch
11:30 a.m.-12 noon
Your Message, Your Brand
12 noon-1:00 p.m.
This session will help potential candidates to learn how to develop a political message and deliver it successfully to the public. Participants will learn how to convince voters to share in a candidate’s vision for his or her district.
Political Fundraising
1:00-1:30 p.m.
Participants will learn strategies for identifying potential contributors to a campaign. They will also understand how much funding is needed to. Participants will walk away with several fundraising techniques and an overview of campaign finance laws.
Candidate Experience Session with Q&A
1:30-2:15 p.m.
Emma Violand-Sanchez will share her experience running for political office. She will also share advice on running a successful campaign and how to transition from candidate to elected official.
