Virtue Trap

Virtue Trap Consider the state of VT: An ostensible "Rock and Roll" band, but this week one guy purchased a house (and not to keep his guitar collection in, but to live in), another celebrated his one-year wedding anniversary (with a party that did not end in a 2am front-lawn brawl, a rarity for College Park), a third spend the T...hanksgiving break installing quarter round, and the last put up the Christmas tree early this year.

This, folks, is not the profile of a rock band. It’s a Moose Lodge. Heck, it isn’t even a Moose Lodge, since a Moose Lodge has beer. We have light beer and “better not, gotta get up early tomorrow to sort the recycling.”

So it is with a certain desperate audacity that we invite you out on Friday night to hear us play rock and roll, a music that is supposed to capture the loud desperation of youth, the soundtrack to the ride to mansions of glory in suicide machines, the sound of fighting for your right to party.

But hold on—why is the rock and roll lifestyle necessary for genuine rock and rolling? After all, when Led Zep claimed they were walking side by side with death, the devil mocking every step, they were actually living large, young and pretty. When Nirvana whined about being so lonely they shaved their heads they were rich enough to buy some really loyal friends. And don’t give that “Kurt proved you can be lonely in an arena full of people” crap. That’s the stuff they pay Casey Casem to say so you’ll buy the “All Apologies” cassingle even thought you already own that song on In Utero and on the MTV Unplugged soundtrack.

So how about this—we’ll rock harder because we are so utterly un-rock and roll, like Weezer without the self-aggrandizement, like Beck without the hypocrisy. That’s right, baby, four guys too old and prosperous to keep the edge will actually prove that age and prosperity is what gives you the edge. We WILL ROCK YOU WITHIN AN INCH OF OUR HELOCS!

See you Friday.

Virtue Trap "First performed in Germany in 1906, Frank Wedekind’s controversial play Spring Awakening closed after one night in New York in 1917 amid charges of obscenity and public outrage. Yet the play’s subject matter—teenage desire, suicide, abortion and homosexuality—is as explosive and important today as it was a century ago." VT will provide music. Oct 22-30.

Virtue Trap Actually, VT at Choc's starts at 7pm, not 6pm. But you weren't gonna be there at 6pm anyway, were you?

Virtue Trap Once a year we shake it up a bit and play Choc's, an establishment of dubious decor right there on 544 across from CCU. We're shaking it up even more by starting at the un-rock-and-roll-ish hour of 6pm and playing four hours. So if you show up for our usual 10pm start you'll have missed it.

Like a Town Hall Meeting, but with Soul

Virtue Trap We normally hype this first show of the semester by talking about new beginnings and the returns of the students and how nice it is to be back, right?

But last week VT lead singer Arne Flaten tore up his ankle participating in some undisclosed but apparently dangerous activity and is now wearing what looks like a ski bo...ot. Yep, a bad sprain with lots of ligament damage.

But we in VT, being avid Fox News viewers, have heard that in cases like this the current repressive regime will convene some kind of tribunal to decide how and when Arne is to be killed and added to the soylent green vats. Now we don’t want the government making life and death decisions, that being the proper province of operations like AIG, but it is true that Arne is like a thoroughbred. If you lame him, you must put him down.

So between songs, we will be asking you, our fanatical followers, to act as an Ad Hoc Death Panel. We’ll do it just like Obama’s thugs have laid it out: endless hearings, confusing paperwork, and finally the cold grip of death. Should Arne be dispatched between the first and second sets? Perhaps at the end of the show? In the parking lot, but only after he helps move the heaviest equipment?

We’ll also invite the Death Panel participants to choose the nature of Arne’s demise, and our sources (talk radio) tell us that only the most inhumane euthanasia methods will be available, so bring a sack full of pennies or a copy of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” to help the pain last as long as possible.

We’ll miss Arne, but he’s really only half a man right now, and if we don’t do this, those bureaucrats in Washington will do it for us.

socialism on the march!
