Recent Comment by Akoni J.: "I was wondering if the video host of the YouTube narrator was Alvin the
Chimpmonk?....if it's not Alvin, than who's is it? Simon?
Theodore?...anyway, Helena's, Highway Inn, and People's Cafe in my
opinion is currently the best! however, nothing beats Uncle Frank
Kealoha's pipi kaula of the old ..."Bobby's Tavern" in Waimanalo, just
outside the tavern he used to hang-dry his meats in a 3'x3'x4'
dry-box,and no one dared to vandalize the pipi kaula, that was left
over-nite just outside the entrance of the tavern!

Anyway, several movie actors use to patronize "Bobby's Tavern" just to
eat pipi kaula, poi, lomi-lomi salmon, sweet onions, and alae-salt.
What a perfect combination!!

I'm not sure if Uncle Frank taught anyone the process of how to prepare
his way of making pipi kaula, I'm thniking Helena's comes very, very
close to that distingushed taste?"

i agree, way better than kua'aina, must be better beef or quality control or something 'cause it seems like a regular burger til you taste it!!! seems like kua'aina kinda went down hill over the past few years.

Dirty Lickins is one of my favorite places to eat. The blue cheese sauce for the wings is the best. Try the volcanic sauce if you can handle spicy food.

This photo of steak and rice made me uku plenty drool! From the Food Mayhem blog: "But this time, I actually have to toot Lon’s horn, because he’s the genius that took my Doubanjiang (Broad Bean Paste with Chili) and slathered it on Beef Short Ribs. It’s ridiculously good, heightening the beefiness to a whole new leve...l of umami overload. The sweet, salty, and spicy matches up to the grill and it becomes a powerfully flavored main course that seems like it’s Szechuan style, but you can’t put your finger on it."Read More

Recent Comment by Douglas: "Dear Sir/Madam,My Nana Costa who was born in the Azores Islands made Malasadas when I was a boy growing up in her care when my mother died. I was 12 years old at the time living in Providence, RI. I love these so much I have tried and tried to make them the same way she did but I have no luc...k at all. Her Malasadas were always light and airy. Mine are always like doughnuts (blah). Would you please, please, please share with me the secret to getting my Malasadas Light and Airy. To my memory they had a mush better tast light and airy than the way I have been making them (consistency of a doughnut)."Read More

WOW Grinds - The Ultimate Battle of Hawaii's Best Grinds How's dis Korean shave ice place in Atlanta? They use "special blocks of ice" so the shavings have a "creamy texture and taste" as the writer puts it. I wonder if Shimazu's uses special ice cause their texture is different from the other places. http://tastychomps.blogspot.com/2009/10/suno-shaved-ice-desserts-atlanta.html

Thanks for the interesting info on the special blade Ricky. Too bad on the franchising proposal Malia, maybe if you keep asking him, he'll give in someday. I saw the pre-shaved ice blocks at Shimazu's and it looked like cloudy ice, not clear ice. Maybe Suno and Shimazu's use cloudy ice (aka. soft ice) which gives it the creamy texture. Here's a link explaining soft vs. hard ice http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen06/gen06033.htm
