Meltzer's Driver Training Center If you live in one of the colder climate regions, remember: Summer windshield washer fluid will freeze. Make sure you have winter solution in your reservoir. A good solution will protect to an outside temperature of at least 30 degrees below zero.

Keeping a spare gallon of fluid in the truck is an excellent idea for those slushy days. Then again, for ANY day - Does the idea of a bird flying (oops) overhead ring a bell?

Meltzer's Driver Training Center If you have summer or regular tires on your car, start thinking snow tires for winter. If you have "all season" tires, make sure there is enough tire tread for winter driving.

Of the many times I was in FL in the 60's, I was there once when it snowed for 5 minutes.

Meltzer's Driver Training Center Several years ago, I got a flat tire at 5:30 the night before Thanksgiving. I put on the spare tire but then I didn't want to ride around without a good spare. I called my mechanic. He said it was too late but bring it in at 7AM on Thanksgiving and he would repair it. THAT, my friends, is dedication. The facility ...was (and still is) http://www.tirekingauto.com/index.htm Yes, I am definitely giving them a plug.

Meltzer's Driver Training Center Dean Joyce: hey some jersey cop was just on tv telling people 1 car length for every 10mph lol. jeez! they are cracking down on tailgaters there.

Dean: 1 car length for every 10mph was what I was taught in 1970. That works out to be 1.25 seconds of travel time. The usual recommendation is now 3 seconds of travel time between vehicles.
.
History: The one car length distance was taught to long truck drivers during World War ll. Those trucks were 3 times the length of today's cars. THEREFORE, if we drove one truck length for every 10 MPH, it would be 3.75 seconds and work out well.

yup, i remember that from our recent convo a couple weeks ago. i find it interesting how now that NJ is enforcing the tailgating rule and handing out tickets, they misinform the public so they will tailgate.

Meltzer's Driver Training Center And Nadine just sent me: thought you would appreciate what I just witnessed here at work. A guy got out of his car and moved the handicapped parking sign to another area of the parking lot and proceeded to pull his vehicle into that space.....

Meltzer's Driver Training Center This guy parks in front of the corner Dry Cleaners. His rear bumper is practically in the intersection. I think, 'That has got to be illegal.' So I looked at the road sign directly in front of his car. It said, "No Parking Here To Corner". Since I had NO IDEA, I looked it up on http://www.wiki.answers.com/Q/What_d...oes_No_parking_here_to_corner_mean and it had an answer. It said, "It means you may not park your car between the sign that says 'No parking here to corner' and the corner." How novel!! I guess he didn't get the memo.

Meltzer's Driver Training Center What is on the mind of someone who tailgates a vehicle? Now how about when the vehicle in front says, in very clear letters, STUDENT DRIVER?

Maybe the sign on top of the car should read "THIS IS ROUTE 9, NOT TALLADEGA - QUIT DRAFTING".

Meltzer's Driver Training Center A great rack. I love a great rack. Do you? Let me tell you. My Power Steering was getting a little tight so I just had the STEERING RACK replaced and wow, what a difference. The wheels turn so easily now.

I drove a van many years ago with a loose rack. One could turn the steering wheel two inches from center in either direction before it would react.

Meltzer's Driver Training Center Are you finding that when someone gets behind the wheel, they DON'T KNOW how to get places? Maybe: Shorter people, whether due to age, stature or physical condition, may not see over the dashboard of the car. They can't see the roads to learn the roads. When they are in the passenger seat, have them sit on cushion...s so they can see out the front window. They may very well learn the roads. Good luck.

Brian Daley

Brian Daley I've been back in New York a year now. My observation is, and I'm sure alot of it has to do with cut-backs and cost-saving's, there seems to be a lesser presense of police on the roads today, and as a result people have gotten perhaps too relaxed, too willing to take chances. Its kind of like a kid not behaving, or pro...ne to doing things he or she normally wouldn't do when there parents arent home...

Brian Daley Forgot to mention this, yesterday morning on the way to a Dr. appointment I after coming to a complete stop & looked both ways at a 4-way stop, had to stop again for someone whom I guess was in a hurry or whatever decided not to come to a stop at a stop sign!!!!!

You know Brian, I am not as anal retentive as some may think. If someone makes a "rolling stop", where they slow extremely, check traffic, it is clear, and they move on, I acknowledge that, although they ARE breaking the law, it MAY be safe. The case you mention, however, is total reckless(this time) driving and I am glad you are still around to write about it.
