The 10 days of Awe are a time when we, as Jews, reflect on our life-path and journey. Throughout our life there have been moments when we have been mistreated and/or hurt by others. Our High Holiday Class on forgiveness will give participants the opportunity to reflect on their relationships and begin to explore how ...forgiveness can help and empower the process of teshuvah, repentance. The course will look at different theological and personal perspectives on how forgiving is a Jewish value and how the act can improve our lives.

Rabbi Jesse Gallop is the rabbi at Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation in Virginia. His areas of interest are working with interfaith families and using Jewish text as inspiration and self-reflection. At Beth Chaverim he teaches both adult and high school education. His outlook on Jewish living is, “Judaism should not control who a person is; rather, our texts and traditions should be used as a mirror so that we accurately look at ourselves, shedding layers, seeing our beauty and our flaws.”

Contact: Justin Lerner at (202) 777-3253 or justinl@washingtondcjcc.org with questions.

Presented in partnership with the Leo & Anna Smilow Center for Jewish Living and Learning

From Harvey Milk to Adrienne Rich, some of the most pioneering activists have shared a common Jewish background. In this moderated discussion, we’ll delve into the intersections between Jewish cultural heritage and activist work for and by the LGBT community.

Panelists include:
Anne Kronenberg, Harvey Milk’s 1977 campa...ign manager and current Director of Policy and Planning at the San Francisco Department of Public Health
Frank Kameny (invited), a leading figure in the gay rights movement who petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court with the first civil rights claim based on sexual orientation. He also coined the term “Gay is Good”
Dr. Dana Beyer, the first transgender candidate for State Delegate in the Maryland House of Delegates, and current Vice President of Equality Maryland
Robert Raben, former Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Clinton Administration and founder of the Raben Group

The panel will be moderated by Winnie Stachelberg, the Senior Vice President for External Affairs at the Center for American Progress. Prior to that role, she served as Vice President of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
