NIOSH researchers are examining the potential causes of work-related asthma in indoor environments and the role of volatile organic compounds. Read more and comment on the NIOSH Science Blog.

NIOSH National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health The NIOSH Science blog http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/ has been updated. NIOSH recently co-sponsored a workshop focused on research needed for characterizing exposures to nanomaterials among workers, other populations, and environments by measuring and modeling exposure levels, and by monitoring indicators of biological responses through the product life of a nanomaterial.

The NIOSH Science blog http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/ has been updated--NO2 Emission Increases Associated With the Use of Diesel Particulate Filters in Underground Mines.
Recent NIOSH research has shown that underground mines using certain types of diesel particulate filters to reduce exposure to diesel particulate matter may increase miners' exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) -- a deep lung irritant. has been updated - Topic: Improved Criteria for Emergency Medical Protective Clothing.
Over one million firefighters and an additional 500,000 Emergency Medical Technicians and other first responders are engaged in emergency medical service (EMS) operations. NIOSH research has led to revised standards for personal protective equipment for EMS workers and, in turn, the development of new equipment and products providing a level of protection not previously available to the nation’s EMS responders. has been updated - Topic: Preventing Death and Injury in Tractor Overturns with Roll-Over Protective Structures
Tractor overturns are the leading cause of occupational agricultural deaths in the United States. NIOSH estimates that Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS) could reduce fatality rates due to tractor overturns by a minimum of 71% if all tractors in the U.S. were equipped with ROPS. Current data shows that less than 60% of farm tractors used in the U.S. are equipped with ROPS. Read more about how NIOSH and others are working to increase ROPS use on the NIOSH Science Blog http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/.

NIOSH National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Use of the solvent 1- bromopropane (1-BP) has increased recently in industries such as dry cleaning and electronics. Case reports demonstrating neurotoxic, reproductive, development and other health effects in workers who use or make 1-BP indicate that the solvent may represent an unrecognized occupational health risk. Read about recent NIOSH reports and how to protect workers on the NIOSH Science Blog ( http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/).

Each year an average of 105 fire fighters die in the line of duty. The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program conducts independent investigations of fire fighter line of duty deaths and formulates recommendations for preventing future deaths and injuries. Visit the NIOSH Science Blog ( http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/) to provide your feedback on the program as well as input on how to better reach small and rural fire departments with the life-saving information generated through this program.

NIOSH National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services.
