Massacre
By John Maynard, Friday, November 06, 2009

A tragic shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, made for some grim headlines Friday morning. The attack, which left 13 dead, is believed to be the largest mass shooting ever to occur on a U.S. military base.

Gun tragedy continues. Today, seven people have been injured and one dead in a shooting at an office high rise in Orlando, Fla. Shooter is NOT in custody, but he has been described as a former employee who was fired two years ago for what was described as "performance issues." Please work for civilized gun control laws! -- 2:17 pm, EST, 9/6/09

When Bud Selig grows a pair and implements a salary cap in baseball so small market teams liked the Kansas City Royals can afford to sign players like Texeira and Sabathia. That would be front page worthy.

Yanks For Everything

The New York Yankees captured their 27th World Series title after upsetting the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6. The New Haven Register proclaimed the Yankees “Back on Top,” while Newsday and The Record said the boys in ...pinstripes are in “27th Heaven.” But best headline of the day goes to the Philadelphia Daily News for “Damn Yankees.” Priceless.Read More

Elections Top the News
By Gene Mater, Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Tuesday was Election Day across the USA, with local voting generally taking the play today. Republican gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey rated some national attention, while in Maine, rejection of a gay-marriage law was almost the only story of the day.

Newseum Looking back one year, do you think the news media did a good job of covering the 2008 presidential election?

Generally speaking, I think the angry-old-white-guy demographic is still unhappy with life and the media, no matter what makes sense, was reported or discussed.

Vote for Election Day!
By Emily Hedges, Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Around the U.S. today, people are voting. We are electing new city council members and governors. We are voting on taxes and same-sex marriages. It seems like only yesterday we voted in a presidential election, but it's been a year already, as at least one newspaper — The Southtown Star — noted.

And the Winner Is
By Sharon Shahid, Monday, November 02, 2009

Somewhere in the world, someone is running for re-election or is seeking office for the first time. In Philadelphia, the Phillies’ hopes to repeat as World Series champions are sinking faster than a Cliff Lee slider. From baseball to elections, today’s top front pages nicely captured the ubiquitous race for the crown.

Seeing the pieces of the Berlin Wall was a powerful experience. I was only 8 when it fell but my parents watched it, I remember not exactly knowing what was going on but knowing this was something important and that I better remember it.

Flying Colors

Today’s top 10 lifts off with spectacular photos of the Ares I-X rocket soaring through the Florida sky. The success of the test flight may signal a return of astronauts to the moon by 2015. But it’s nice to see papers from Utah to Florida pulling out all the stops this morning.
