What a great man. i suggest Team of Rivals audio about Lincoln. It is great. Richard Thomas reads the book and really brings to life the heartache of losing the children, Mary Todd's knack for politics and partying and her depression over losing her son. Also he brings to life Lincoln's joy at going to the theater the night he was shot. Richard Thomas surely paints a picture from Doris Kearns Goodwin's book.

@ Kara Our lives are changing. Sometime, Sunday morning is the only time to get to Wal-Mart. I am a nurse and I work odd night shifts and when I get off of work, the world is asleep but I still need milk or lightbulbs or antacids. When the world is awake I am asleep. Better to have family at Wal-Mart that not at all.

At 2 o’clock in the afternoon, 146 years ago today, Lincoln delivered his address at Gettysburg. Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. ...

Yes. Also, marring a wealthy widow like Mary Todd didn't hurt his mission.....you have to wonder how much he would of accomplished if he didn't have the income?

You might be thinking of Martha Washington, Teresa. Mary Todd was not a widow when she and Abraham Lincoln married. Their first "home" after they wed was an 8' x 14' room at the Globe Tavern. Not until Lincoln gained some success as a lawyer were they able to have comforts closer to those Mary had known in her girlhood. You might enjoy reading ... See MoreMrs. Lincoln: A Life by Catherine Clinton, published in 2009. It's a great first-read for anyone interested in a balanced history (and context for historical criticism or praise) of Mrs. Lincoln.

Stephanie Waszak I heard that there was "talk" about moving the Cottage. I've been involved with historic structures since 1991 and I hope that the cottage stays intact to give a historical context to the building. When buildings are moved to make them more easy to access the tourist trade, it does destroy a big part of their story.

Hi Stephanie. Thankfully that's not true! There has never been a discussion in recent decades about moving the Cottage, certainly not since the National Trust for Historic Preservation assumed stewardship in 2000. The National Monument boundaries include 2.3 acres of landscape. We feel strongly that the land, the vistas, are very much part of ... See Morethe interpretation of Lincoln's experience here.

We recently posted a piece from the Soldiers' Home archives about one man's proposal to move the Cottage way back in 1903, to make way for a new dormitory building for veterans. Thankfully they built the new dormitory north of the Cottage, as originally planned, and left the Cottage in place.

For nearby B&Bs, check http://www.bedandbreakfastdc.com/. We're not in a hotel/inn heavy part of DC, but there are plenty of places within a 2 mile radius, and it appears there is a B&B on Otis Place just over a mile from us.
