On Thursday, December 10, 2009, the League hosted a special holiday dinner to raise funds for an ultrasound machine for our Medical Center. The dinner, for which guests donated $1,000 per person to attend, took place with approximately 30 guests at the fabulous Blue Duck Tavern at the Park Hyatt Washington. We would ...like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our generous donors and to the Park Hyatt for making this evening so special---and successful.
This fall, the Washington Animal Rescue League received many extremely generous contributions to our drive to raise funds for an ultrasound machine for our Medical Center.
We want to let you know that, happily, we had a very strong response to the request and raised enough to not only buy the ultrasound machine, but also provide approximately $30,000 of additional support for 2010 programs operated by our Medical Center. And we are still receiving thoughtful donations in response to this solicitation.
Just a day or so after sending out our request, a terrific friend of animals, Dr. Phyllis Huene of Annandale, Virginia, called to say she would like to donate the entire amount of $33,650 for the machine and did just that. Her name will now appear on a plaque in the lobby of the Medical Center.
“I am an ordinary person who has always loved animals, and who was moved by the plight of so many animals at present who need specialized medical care at the League. I knew how much an ultrasound would benefit them in their diagnosis and treatment,” says Dr. Huene, a retired dermatologist.
The solicitation we sent about this machine noted that any funds raised above and beyond the $33,650 would support our Medical Center’s rehabilitation of our shelter animals and its free and reduced-cost care for low-income city residents who bring us their canine and feline friends for much-needed treatment. In these economically challenging times, these significant contributions for our veterinary services will certainly be well spent.
Meanwhile, the ultrasound machine has been purchased and received. It will be of tremendous value in diagnosing cancer, internal injuries and a wide range of diseases affecting the liver, kidney, heart and other major organs. It also will allow us to see subtle anatomical detail, especially tissue that X-rays do not pick up, more clearly and enable us to make tough diagnoses more quickly and accurately.
One additional update we would like to provide is about Dextera, the Yorkie mix whose photo and story were featured in the solicitation we sent you about the ultrasound machine. You may remember that she came to us with more than 80 other dogs seized from a puppy mill bust in Arkansas. According to our medical director, Dr. Janet Rosen, she was “the most emaciated dog I have ever seen.” Conditions were so bad at this puppy mill that the proprietor was found guilty of misdemeanors and lost his kennel permit.
Dextera, who had a large tumor that needed to be removed, is now, thankfully, doing much better. If we had owned an ultrasound machine at the time, we would have been able to make a more exact diagnosis before removing Dextera’s tumor.
According to Dr. Rosen, “If we’d had the machine when Dextera arrived from the puppy mill, we would have ultrasounded her before doing her mammary mass removal to see if it looked like the cancer had already spread to internal organs, like her liver. If that had been the case, we wouldn't have put her through the discomfort of surgery. As it turned out, the mammary tumor was not the kind that tends to spread anyway, but we didn't know that at the time.”
As you can see, the equipment you helped us purchase will make an incredible difference for so many other of our furry friends like Dextera.
Dextera, we are pleased to report, has gained weight, had her teeth cleaned, seen her hair grown back, and emerged from a shell of depression and quiet. She is now available for adoption! Despite her ordeals, this little dog has a happy disposition and what seems to be an indomitable spirit.
Thank you for making success stories like this possible and helping to turn around the life of an animal who has known very little but abject misery—and others like her. One day, Dextera will find a new family to adopt her and give her all the love and warmth she deserves. Her tail will be wagging well into the future; we feel sure of that.
We believe this ultrasound machine was the greatest holiday gift we could give the animals cared for by the League, and it is a gift that will keep giving our cats and dogs improved medical care for many years to come.
For those of you who attended our special holiday dinner for ultrasound machine donors, we are so glad we were able to host you for this event which proved so popular that it has required us to host an additional dinner in January. Look for us to host a similar holiday dinner to raise funds for a much-needed item or service next year. Please pencil us in for early December.
Best wishes for a wonderful 2010! Come see us often next year to adopt, foster, volunteer, and/or shop.
From Dextera, and all of us, thanks again to Dr. Huene and all of you for your generous support!

Washington Animal Rescue League A woman came in to surrender her white Poodle. League staff saw a large wound around the dogs neck & ears-the lady explained her daughter had put a headband on the dog (for decoration) but that the dog "was fine". It turns out, the "headband" was 1/2 inch deep embedded in the dog's neck and ears and had to be surgicall...y removed. The dog is recovering well & will be made available for adoption once he heals completely!

Washington Animal Rescue League We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the dedicated staff and the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at the League!!

Veterans and Shelter Animals Meet With Pets2Vets

Washington Animal Rescue League 5 members of the League staff were invited to attend a Holiday Tour of the White House on Monday! We were invited because the White House is launching an outreach to the animal community through their Office of Public Engagement. This was an introductory step, and the League is excited to be a part of this venture!

Washington Animal Rescue League The League received a call from a woman who said that she had recently become homeless and she had left her cat by our back door. Employees scrambled to find the cat (we have many doors in the building). One noticed an overturned banana box, and nearby, a beautiful black and white cat hiding under a van. The cat walked... right up to her and was taken into the adoptions office and fed. He quickly became a staff favorite, walking up to greet everyone who came by to meet him, and he is a very affectionate and outgoing boy who will get a second chance here at the League with a forever family.
