Washington Tennis & Education Foundation The Washington Tennis & Education Foundation Tennis Ball will be held on Friday, May 8, 2009. It will be comprised of two events: The VIP Round Robin tennis tournament and the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF) Tennis Ball dinner.

The WTEF Tennis Ball is the major annual fundraiser for WTEF, and all proce...eds benefit WTEF, its programs, and the children it serves. The evening at the Ritz Carlton consists of both a Live and Silent Auction, dinner and recognition of honorees. This year, WTEF is pleased to present Andrea Jaeger with the Champion of Tennis Award and Sheila Johnson with the William H.G. FitzGerald Distinguished Service Award. Tennis Channel personality, Washington Kastles coach and Grand Slam champion Murphy Jensen will also participate in the dinner and VIP Round Robin.

Ms. Jaeger is a former World No. 2 professional tennis player. After becoming a professional tennis player at the age of fourteen, Ms. Jaeger’s tennis achievements include wins over Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, getting to the finals of Wimbledon and the French Open and winning numerous professional tennis titles. In 1990, Ms. Jaeger started a children’s cancer foundation using all of her professional tennis earnings. Little Star Foundation provides long term care and improves the quality of life for children with cancer and children in need worldwide, all at no cost to families. In addition in 2006, Ms. Jaeger became Sister Andrea, an Episcopal nun.

Ms. Johnson is CEO of Salamander Hospitality, LLC, overseeing a growing portfolio of luxury properties and lifestyle businesses. She is the first African-American woman to have a stake in three professional sports teams, the Washington Mystics (WNBA), the Washington Wizards (NBA), and the Washington Capitals (NHL). Ms. Johnson is also a TV pioneer, having been a founding partner of BET (Black Entertainment Television). Her focus is building solidarity and empowering women and girls to become catalysts for change in communities around the world.

The VIP Round Robin Tournament May 9, 2009 (10AM-1PM) features doubles competition among tennis celebrities, members of Congress, Tennis Ball sponsors, media, and other VIPs from the DC business community.
