Water For People
What’s an indicator of success within water and sanitation work in developing countries? We need to move away from thinking about the number of beneficiaries "per year," and look at long term impact. The number of beneficiaries tells you the number of people getting water today, but we want to talk about the number of ...people who will STILL be getting water in 3 years, 6 years, and 10 years. – Ned Breslin, CEORead More

Water For People Ned Breslin, CEO, at the Atlantic's Water Summit today in the National Press Club of D.C. on a panel called "Have we made progress?" with members from the Gates Foundation, WaterAid and WSSCC. He's currently discussing how critical it is to focus on the long-term success of sanitation systems - not just 1 year or 2 years of service.

Women
in Kachere, a peri-urban area outside Blantyre, Malawi, purchase safe
water at a Water For People kiosk. 50 kwacha (36 US cents) for a 20L
bucket. Ten more kiosks coming in November. A small financial
contribution from families enables communities, partners and NGOs to
maintain, repair, and when needed, replace water ...points, dramatically
increasing sustainability and self-sufficiency in the long-term. - Photo by Joanna M - Water For People

So much research has shown that payment--even in very small amounts--for water and sanitation services increases personal and emotional investment in the projects. As a researcher, I applaud WFP's research-grounded methods.
