World Toilet Day is Thursday, November 19 and Water For People wants to get people talking about toilets—a topic not often discussed in everyday conversation. More than 6,000 people die every day, including 4,000 children, from diseases caused by poor sanitation and unsafe water.

In rural Malawi, Water For People and our partners are promoting children's arbor loos. These shallow latrines are left out in the open because very small children prefer to watch what's going on around them, and parents prefer being able to see them. Once the pit is full, the family plants a tree in the pit, and it …grows like mad, feeding off the nutrient-rich contents of the pit.
