Weingolb Pelissero Augenta Dolcetto d'Alba 06 will divide yr dinner party down the middle, but I know I'll get more! Phaneuf singles it out for big oak yet there are many other Dolcetto woodier than this. It's high extract - intense bitter notes, dark cherry pits, confit of orange peel, looming star anise, all augmented by presence of alcohol & hard drying tannins that are as much from grape as from barrel

Weingolb More Phaneuf-styled (but penned by me) posts on as-yet unreviewed wine in anticipation of the Guide de Vin release this week...

I say admirable but slightly impenetrable at its current stage - youthful fruit in the past; age still making it mellow. Fine wine & example of how Phaneuf is a great, but not perfect taster, for me

Weingolb Took Coste del Molino Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi 05 & Tenimenti Fontanafredda Vigna La Lepre Diano d'Alba 07 to Luciano's Red Room in Verdun last week - was a hit (great salads call for zesty white; lingering almondy finish of Dolcetto a shoe-in at any slow service resto... Another Friday, another Italian BYO resto to curate: Getting Petit Rouge to Chez Ennio immediately

Organic wines Ch. la Tour de L'Évêque Côtes de Provence 08 (blanc) & Perrin Nature CDR 07 welcomed winter last night by being warming but not hot at dinner, which was the final local farm basket of fall. Authentic Pan de Muerto bade goobye to it all. L'Évêque Sémillon/Rolle was hard-edged w/ juniper & martini hints; Pe...rrin had more alcohol, more herb too so lavender & bright fruit worked a nimble balanceRead More

Weingolb Corsican white wine - look into it! Orenga de Gaffory Patrimonio 06: flinty, lemony, notable viscosity, and wood? - a great vermentino that you ought to let warm up a bit (into the double digits Celsius). Must buy more of this as this vintage has been drinking well since the spring, when I first tasted it.

Weingolb Jean Perrier Pinot Noir Cuvée Gastronomie Vin de Savoie 07 apt cuvee name for a balanced Pinot that snickers at New World wood, fruit bombs or any hint of opaqueness at the table. Rust-colored red w/ true pizzazz, chilled to 12°C it compliments yr food + its terroir. Also, stops at 12% alc so it can actually be a wash-down-yr-dinner wine sans regret

Weingolb Thinks he was made fun of for noting a hint of rosemary in the cranberry freezie shooters during weekend festivities. Chumps can get jealous. Mazzei's Tenuta Belguardo Bronzone Morellino di Scansano 05 rocked Toussaint dinner and there's only 06s on shelves. Plus, apero Kim Crawford SB Marlborough 08 had even more herbs then those vodka shots.

Weingolb Didn't know Serrano ham would be at the Halloween party, but it made my Mantinia Moschofilero by Boutari (08) the right choice. Saline, w/ flowery melon on the finish. As tantalizing & bracing on its own as with the snack tray. And only 11.5% - ultimate 6-hrs-of-drinking party beverage? Great deal at LCBO, tho I picked it up trick-or-treating (+$2 = trick) at the late-night Séléction on Mt-Royal.

Uh oh. Bela Fonte Jaen Vinho Regional Beiras 03 tasted oxidized served right after an exceptionally-nippy, more-than-lifted, takes-2-glasses-2-get-used-2-the-volatil ity 07 Bordeaux Sauv Blanc from Dourthe. Next day, doesn't seem oxidized, tho maybe flat and definitely short on the finish. The scourge of the 15% discount poisoning my palate or an illustration of the art of wine-with-wine pairings? DISCUSS!

More on that Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso: Orecchiette al ragù di agnello wasn’t ready; I order a Refosco (http://bit.ly/1N2Cst) to pass time. Heard it was light & thought it a good aperitif. But resto called it a CabSauv standin. Who to believe? Tenuta Luisa fumbles toward truth with a little lost-in-tanslation lingo...: “typically tanninous & pleasently plain” Hefty & pure at same time! Refosco, best of both worldsRead More
