In I Got Sick Then I Got Better Jenny Allen combines enormous humor with wrenching emotion for a witty, bittersweet monologue about being diagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer.
From the Cape Cod Times, June 12, 2009:
"I Got Sick Then I Got Better is comic-journalist Jenny Allen's "witty, bittersweet monologue" about b...eing diagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer, or "falling down a medical rabbit hole." WHAT describes the show as "inimitably honest and unexpectedly hilarious" and quotes Allen on how she found humor in her medical crisis:
"It's a kind of gallows humor, a black humor, but it seemed to me that there was humor — as well, of course, as great poignancy and sadness — in so many situations I found myself in when I was in treatment and afterward," she said. "There's also great humor in anger, and I was angry a lot of the time. I felt bad, and some of the doctors made me feel worse, and I felt I wasn't getting enough attention from my husband, so I was alert to every slight. I mention in the piece how I thought he invented a new, loud way of swallowing water just in order to annoy me."
Allen, who produces and performs stand-up comedy evenings in Manhattan, has had her writing published in a variety of national magazines. Her essays have been collected in anthologies, and she has written a book of fables for grown-ups called "The Long Chalkboard," illustrated by husband Jules Feiffer, an award-winning cartoonist and writer.
I Got Sick Then I Got Better was first performed two years ago on Martha's Vineyard, where Feiffer has long summered, then in a longer version there last year, as well as at Barrington Stage Company and Dartmouth College. Since the first reading, James Lapine , another part-time island resident and a Tony Award-winning director ("Sunday in the Park With George," "Into the Woods") has been working with Allen and co-director Darren Katz (director of the current tour of "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee") on expanding the piece.
New York Theatre Workshop is due to produce the show this fall. But first, a tryout at WHAT, at 8 p.m. June 16 on its Julie Harris Stage on Route 6." - KATHI SCRIZZI DRISCOLL

The Mystery of Irma Vep
a penny dreadful
by Charles Ludlam - Directed by Todd Olson.
May 20 – June 20 Wednesday – Sunday at 8:00pm
Hitchcock’s “Rebecca”, the novels of the Bronte sisters and practically every monster movie ever made are tossed together and shaken vigorously to create this literate, fast paced comedy. With ...two actors portraying a dozen delectable roles, Irma Vep is a tour-de-force that can’t be missed.
This hilarious hit from our 1991 season returns to celebrate our 25th.

As we enter our 25th season I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be “WHAT.” Sometime during the dark winter of 1991 I was holed up in a drafty converted garage in my winter rental on Commercial street, writing our first ever grant application. One...
