We took in Niko, a Shepherd mix, under our Pets are Family Too program. Niko's owner lost her job, then her house. It is a tough time for both people and pets in this economy.

This is Jessie, a poor stray dog who had been living at a gas station for a few months. We received a call about her and found that a lot of people were bringing food to her but she was too shy to let anyone get near her. Another dog that she was with had already been killed by a car. Animal Control had been trying ...to catch her, but they were afraid that she would run into traffic if they chased her. They tried to get the gas station owner to sign for a dog trap, but he refused. After some convincing, the gas station owner finally agreed to let Animal Control trap her. One woman who had been trying to befriend Jessie for 2 months said she wanted to adopt Jessie. So... after her 3-day hold at the County Shelter, Jessie went home to get her second chance for a wonderful new life. We provided Jessie's basic initial vet care and her new mom donated to cover the cost of her spay, rabies vaccine and heartworm test. She was very shy as we were processing her adoption at the shelter, but she certainly looks like she is happy in her new home!Read More

I picked up several pets from flood victims for temporary boarding this
week. Mostly from people with collapsed ceilings who were staying with
friends or family. Some still didn't have electricity. This lady -
Mary J. - had her ceiling collapse and it was growing dangerous mold
while she is waiting to get it repaired. ...She is staying with a friend
who found out she is allergic to cats, so we're helping her out with
her kitty Midnight until it is safe for them to move back home.Read More

are doing okay since the flooding but a lot of the roads are washed out
and there might be more rain this weekend. We saw this Basset girl
laying on the side of a washed out road in Winston and thought she was
dead, but she was just wet, lost, hungry and exhausted. Please let me know if anyone is looking for her!
