Save the West Lafayette Schools! An update on how the funding crisis is affecting other school districts across Indiana, including one where a tax referendum was defeated in November.

Other school districts have or are considering a general fund tax referendum. The financial situation caused by the State taking over all school district’s general fund is having a major impact on many ...

Save the West Lafayette Schools! Op-ed in today's J&C by a WLCSC paraprofessional and former teacher who pushes back against the argument that there is room left to make cuts in the education budget. The usual suspects clamber to fill the comments section with the usual insistence that per-pupil spending is too high (Indiana ranks 49th in the Union, according to Gannet).

I am not a media basher. Newspapers have given me information, education and entertainment for many years. I have worked for four newspapers, as a writer in most cases. In all of my journalism work,

Save the West Lafayette Schools! Very bad news: state revenue forecasts are far worse than expected. Daniels is telling the state's schools to cut $300 million in the next 18 months. How they are going to do this without cutting teachers is difficult to imagine.

Gov. Mitch Daniels told public schools Tuesday that they will have to cut $300 million over the next 18 months in light of a revenue forecast that predicts the state will raise $1.8 billion less than

Save the West Lafayette Schools! Given the inclusiveness of the list--and its author--this seems like a dubious distinction. Indiana forces public education to do a whole lot for not enough money. And now the state is asking schools to do it for 50% less money. I guess you could say that's a "best buy" but wait and see what graduation and college m...atriculation rates--not to mention the almighty test score profiles--look like in 5 years if nothing is done to fix this mess.

Save the West Lafayette Schools! A letter to the editor in support of the referendum brings out more of the same sort of comments in opposition. The idea that Rocky is not "living within his budget" is exactly the kind of propaganda of which we must disabuse voters between now and May 4. Add your comments to the J&C website and talk up the true natu...re of this fiscal crisis with your neighbors!

Save the West Lafayette Schools! A group of WL patrons, including Rocky Killion, Bob Reiling, Brad Cohen, Chris Campbell, and me, attended this morning's County Council meeting. Here is Rocky's report: After some discussion, the resolution passed 7-0. Initially one councilor asked that the resolution be tabled until January. No one seconded the mo...tion. The resolution now goes to the county board of elections in January.

Save the West Lafayette Schools! Please feel free to add comments to the J&C and WLFI websites where stories appear on the referendum. Some of the posters are clearly opposed and unwilling to be persuaded otherwise, but others are actually on the fence, and those are the folks we want to listen to and respond to as much as possible between now and May.

Save the West Lafayette Schools! The school board voted unanimously to proceed with the referendum process last night. We're going to need everyone's support--talk to your neighbors, friends, parents, and grandparents.

WEST LAFAYETTE - The West Lafayette School Board will proceed with a tax referendum to help support operating expenses. The referendum would give the West Lafayette School district a maximum of about 3.5 million dollars each year. ...

Randy WL School Board unanimously passed a tax referendum measure to ask the voters to approve $0.43 per $100 Assessed Value after public comments and a detailed recommendation by the school Superintendent Dr. Rocky Killion. I fully support this -- the corporation will be unable to continue its tradition of excellence if this is not passed.

Save the West Lafayette Schools! The School Board meets tonight at 6:30 in the Happy Hollow Media Center. On the agenda will be the Superintendent's recommendation(s) about a possible tax referendum proposal to address the state-created funding crisis. Everyone is welcome.
