As we look to the future of rail travel, let’s not forget how we frakked it up in the past. It may be a uniquely American attitude to tear down something beautiful just because it’s old or reminds us too much of the past (or not—see: the Communists). ...

"Escape from New York" meets "Sound of Music" -- glad it is "sustainable" but hey, where is the deterrent to crime here? Prison should not be summer camp or Gilligan's Island, folks, or maybe Norwegian convicts are different somehow (unlikely)?
Chelsea Green Publishing at 12:54pm June 29
Another interesting question: what IS a "criminal"? Considering the massive over-incarceration in this country (more people incarcerated than any other industrial nation in the history of the world), not to mention how many people are in prison because of non-violent, drug-related offenses (and out-dated drug laws that serve who, again?), it's a term that might be used too easily.

Bion at 3:46pm June 29
Very thoughtful response, thanks. I am not a philosopher but rather a pragmatist. For sure we do need to take a clear-headed look at "Justice" as a living duty of our country, to make sure it IS just. Right on.
