Whitney Smith Pottery new blog post: the importance of getting help in the studio, and how to find the right people.

Source: whitneys-pottery.blogspot.com
I had a new intern start yesterday, a high school student obsessed with clay. Next week, I have another person starting as an assistant who I've been wooing since the summertime. She's coming from another studio so she has experience, a quality that is difficult to find. ...

Good idea! I'm actually going to hire 2, one for the studio and one as a babysitter/someone to help around the house. Should be interesting!!! I might have my husband interview with me - I'll need his approval too!Now to figure out wages...

My unsolicited advice is to leave the husband out of it, at least for the studio assistant interview. He will likely trust your choice and having another opinion on who to hire can just muddy the waters.

This morning at 10 am, a freight truck came to my studio and took the Japan order. The driver was a young eastern European gentleman who obviously thought I was insane as I took pictures of the pallet and slapped a bunch of "fragile" stickers on the wrap. ...

I love the packages tied up in string, the "lagniappes" of candy, the Hello Kitty colors, the shelves groaning under the weight of such beautiful pieces. Congratulations, Whitney, and thank you for the wonderful details of your order from beginning to successful end. Pat

Whitney Smith Pottery new blog post: remember the loma prieta earthquake 20 years later.

I moved without any relationship ties or connections to my new hometown, and many of my new relationships seemed tenuous, especially compared to the deep friendships I had back in Delaware during my high school years. ...

You are not only an amazing artist, you are a wonderful writer. I was very much moved by the terror you were feeling. I kept thinking - and this is not to diminish your story in any way - of people who live in war zones who have to go through that kind of terror day after day after day. Thank you for sharing in such a deeply personal way.
