Company Overview:
ASCD launched the Whole Child Initiative to encourage schools and communities to work together to ensure that each student has access to a challenging curriculum in a healthy and supportive climate. ASCD is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that represents more than 175,000 educators from 119 countries who advocate sound policies and share best practices.

Mission:
It's Time to Educate the Whole Child:

Did you know?

· One student drops out of high school every 26 seconds.
· Nine million children between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight.
· Almost 1,000 kids are victims of violent crimes every day.

Common sense and research tell us bored kids don't thrive, unhealthy kids can't learn, and scared kids can’t think. You know each child deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged in learning, supported by caring adults, and academically challenged.

Schools can’t do this work alone. ASCD's Whole Child Initiative calls on parents, educators, and anyone who cares about kids to join forces so that each child benefits from the comprehensive education required in today's changing world.

Will the candidates address the needs of the whole child?

On Friday, September 26, Jim Lehrer of the PBS NewsHour will moderate the first U.S. presidential debate of the 2008 election. Gwen Ifill from PBS will moderate the only vice presidential debate on October 2.
As a whole child advocate, ask Lehrer (jlehrer@newshour.org) and Ifill (gifill@pbs.org) to help make whole child education a priority in this election by questioning the candidates on their education policies.

Definitely attend the whole child conference in Istanbul (http://www.ascd.org/portal/site/ascd/menuitem.4636c05f3df2ab940ab3ffdbe3108a0c/)! It's being put on by ASCD Middle East (www.ascdme.org) and is our first effort in that part of the world.

We understand that students' basic physiological and psychological needs must be satisfied before they can fully engage in learning, relationships, and community. The INCREASED STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH INCREASED STUDENT SUPPORT Act, a bill in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, aims to increase desperately needed instructional and school-based mental health services for students in low-income communities.

Learn more about supporting students by increasing counseling services and take action by sending a letter to your Senators and Representative asking them to cosponsor this legislation (www.wholechildeducation.org/blackboard).
