Wichita Symphony Orchestra Beautiful enough, if not entirely pertinent to the calendar. Here's to hoping everyone has a nice, safe Christmas.

on Christmas day of 1821, this sonata would be the Beethoven's
second-to-last (or, if we're choosing to pull out our dictionaries, his
penultimate) piece in the genre he effectively destroyed for his
followers.

Wichita Symphony Orchestra Fun winter-time activity: listening to fugues in the snow.

It's a little-known and untrue fact that polyphony developed as a musical technique to represent precipitation in program music.

Shostakovich is great. We need to hear you guys play the Leningrad Symphony one of these days, one of my personal favorites.

Wichita Symphony Orchestra Christmas Pops Concert coming up. To get in the pops spirit, here's a video of virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin with jazz legend Stephane Grapelli. While Menuhin ultimately seems out of place, his sentiment is noble and his tone evokes the sound of John Coltrane playing the simplest of standards. Interesting bits of interview with Menuhin in the video.

Wichita Symphony Orchestra just wrapped up this year's round of Young People's Concerts. Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Ochestra" comes up frequently when discussing classical music and children, but the English composer also gave two of the leading roles in one of his final operas to child singers. Here's a clip from his "Turn of the Screw"
